11.2 Appliance Categories I-IV, Vent Materials & Vent Connectors
Quick Answer: The four vented appliance categories are defined by exactly two variables - vent static pressure (non-positive or positive) and whether the vent gas temperature is capable of causing excessive condensate in the vent. Two Variables, Four Boxes
The International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) and NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code classify vented appliances for exactly one purpose: choosing a vent. Both variables are pass/fail, so two variables produce four categories. Nothing about efficiency, fuel or appliance type enters the definition.

Two consequences follow immediately. A draft hood can appear only on a Category I appliance, because a draft hood dilutes flue gas with room air and cannot hold positive pressure. A fan-assisted combustion system - an appliance with an integral mechanical means of drawing or forcing products of combustion through the heat exchanger (IFGC 504.1) - can land in any of the four categories, so you cannot classify an appliance by spotting its blower.
The temperature number that is not in the code
Trade references routinely say "Category I is above 275 degrees F, Category IV is below 275 degrees F." Read the actual definition and no number appears: the code says a vent gas temperature that avoids excessive condensate production (Categories I and III) or is capable of causing it (Categories II and IV). The 275 degree figure belongs to UL vent-temperature classes, not to the category definitions. On an open-book exam, look the definition up instead of reciting the number.
What Vent Material Each Category Requires
IFGC 2018 Table 503.4 assigns the venting system by appliance, and Section 501.14 hands Categories II, III and IV to the manufacturer.

Section 502.1 carves out one exception worth memorizing: plastic vents for Category IV appliances are not required to be listed and labeled where the vent is specified by the appliance manufacturer and installed per that manufacturer's instructions. Section 503.4.1 still requires the appliance itself to be listed for plastic venting and the instructions to identify the specific plastic, and 503.4.1.1 requires primer, where used, to be a contrasting color so an inspector can confirm it was applied.
Two hard prohibitions police the boundary between categories. Section 501.6 requires a venting system that will see positive pressure to be designed for positive-pressure application, and 503.5.1 requires a factory-built chimney serving a positive-pressure appliance to be listed for that use. Type B, Type B-W and Type L: Three Different Jobs

- Type B-W gas vent - the oval Type B variant listed for listed vented wall furnaces only (Table 503.4). Its listed capacity must be not less than that of the wall furnace it serves (503.6.3), and it terminates not less than 12 feet in vertical height above the bottom of the wall furnace (503.6.6).
- Type L vent - low-temperature venting listed to UL 641, the venting system for listed combination gas- and oil-burning appliances and for residential appliances listed for use with Type L. Single-Wall Metal Vent Connectors: Where They Are Prohibited
A vent connector is the piece running from the appliance flue collar or draft hood outlet to the chimney or vent. Single-wall connector stock is cheap and is the default on residential water heaters, but the IFGC boxes it in tightly.
Permitted: exposed runs inside the conditioned space in which the appliance sits, at the clearances of Table 503.10.5, made of galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.018 inch, aluminum (1100 or 3003 alloy) not less than 0.027 inch, or stainless steel not less than 0.012 inch (503.10.2.3).
Prohibited:
- Attics, crawl spaces and other unconditioned spaces. That portion of the connector must be listed Type B, Type L or listed vent material of equivalent insulating value (503.10.2.2). The single exception covers single-wall pipe located within the exterior walls of a building where the local 99-percent winter design temperature is 5 degrees F or higher, and it still excludes attics and crawl spaces.
- Through any wall, floor or ceiling. Single-wall connectors shall not pass through them except as permitted by 503.7.4 (503.10.13).
- Originating in or crossing concealed space. Single-wall metal pipe shall not originate in an unoccupied attic or concealed space and shall not pass through any attic, inside wall, concealed space or floor (503.7.6). Its permitted use is a run directly from the space where the appliance is located, through the roof or exterior wall, to the outdoors (503.7.4).
- Wrapped in insulation. Vent connectors shall not be covered with insulation unless they are listed insulated connectors (503.10.2.3).
Where single-wall pipe does penetrate a combustible exterior wall, 503.7.7 requires a ventilated metal thimble 4 inches larger in diameter than the pipe for listed draft-hood appliances (2 inches larger where at least 6 feet of pipe runs in the open between the draft hood outlet and the thimble), 6 inches larger for unlisted draft-hood appliances, and 12 inches larger for residential and low-heat appliances.
Connector Size, Length, Rise, Slope and Support
Size. Connectors for Category I appliances are sized from Section 504 or approved engineering methods (503.10.3.1). A connector for a draft-hood appliance shall not be smaller than the draft hood outlet, and no connector may be increased more than two sizes above the listed appliance categorized vent diameter, flue collar diameter or draft hood outlet diameter (504.3.21). Where a connector is enlarged to gain capacity, the increase is made at the appliance draft hood outlet (503.10.3.5).
Length. Two different limits apply, and candidates mix them up:

Table 504.3.2 spells the last rule out: 3 in. = 4 1/2 ft, 4 in. = 6 ft, 5 in. = 7 1/2 ft, 6 in. = 9 ft, 8 in. = 12 ft, 10 in. = 15 ft, 12 in. = 18 ft. Section 504.3.3 permits longer connectors at a price - maximum capacity drops 10 percent for each additional multiple of the allowed length, so a 4-inch connector run from 6 to 12 feet uses 0.90 x max and one run from 12 to 18 feet uses 0.80 x max.
Worked length check. A Type B vent rises 16 feet above the flue collar. A single-wall connector may run 0.75 x 16 = 12 feet horizontally; a Type B double-wall connector may run 1.00 x 16 = 16 feet. If that water heater is instead common-vented with a furnace and its connector is 4 inches, Section 504.3.2 cuts the allowance to 6 feet no matter what the 75-percent math produced. The more restrictive rule always governs.
Rise and slope. Section 503.10.7 requires a vent connector to be installed without dips or sags and to slope upward toward the vent or chimney not less than 1/4 inch per foot. Over a 9-foot connector that is 9 x 1/4 = 2 1/4 inches of rise, minimum. The only exception is a connector attached to a mechanical draft system installed per the appliance and draft-system manufacturers' instructions.
Support and chimney entry. Section 503.10.9 requires the connector to be supported for the weight of the material used, to maintain clearances and to prevent joint separation. Joints, Clearance to Combustibles and the Damper Prohibition
Joints (503.10.6). Joints between connector sections, and connections to flue collars and draft hood outlets, shall be fastened by one of three methods: sheet metal screws; listed vent material assembled and connected per the manufacturer's instructions; or other approved means. Notice what the code does not say - it fixes no number of screws. The familiar three-screws-per-joint at roughly 120 degrees apart is a manufacturer instruction and a good-practice standard, not IFGC text, so answer a joint-fastening question from the manufacturer's instructions when the exam supplies them. The same is true of how far a male crimped end must be inserted into the female end: the depth of engagement comes from the vent or connector listing. What is universal in the field is direction - the crimped end points toward the appliance so any condensate runs back down inside the pipe instead of weeping out the seam.

Manufacturer instructions for a listed appliance or connector override the table (footnote a), and clearances may be reduced where the combustible material is protected as specified for vent connectors in Table 308.2.
Dampers. Section 503.13 states it without qualification: a manually operated damper shall not be placed in the vent connector for any appliance. Fixed baffles are not classified as manually operated dampers. Section 503.14 permits an automatically operated vent damper only where it is of a listed type, and 503.15 prohibits any device that retards the flow of vent gases in a connector, chimney or vent - naming listed draft regulators, listed safety controls, listed heat reclaimers and listed automatic vent dampers as the exceptions.
Masonry Chimneys: Lining and When Relining Is Required
Section 503.5.3 requires a masonry chimney to be lined with approved clay flue lining (ASTM C315), a chimney lining system listed and labeled to UL 1777, or other approved material that resists corrosion, erosion, softening and cracking from vent gases at temperatures up to 1,800 degrees F. The exception allows a flue serving draft-hood, Category I and Type B-listed appliances to be lined with a system listed only for those appliances, provided a permanent label at the connection point states the liner is for gas-burning appliances only and must not be connected to solid or liquid fuel appliances or incinerators.
Before connecting anything, 503.5.6 requires the chimney passageway to be examined to confirm it is clear and free of obstructions, and cleaned if it previously vented solid or liquid fuel. Section 503.5.6.1 requires lining in accordance with NFPA 211, with one exception: an existing chimney that passes the 503.5.6 through 503.5.6.3 inspection and is sized correctly under 503.5.5 may remain in service where the appliance it vents is replaced by an appliance of similar type, input rating and efficiency. Swap an 80-percent atmospheric boiler for a 95-percent condensing unit and that exception disappears. Section 503.5.6.3 requires an unsafe chimney to be repaired, rebuilt, lined, relined or replaced, and 501.15.2 requires the flue liner or inner wall to be continuous and free of cracks, gaps and perforations. Finally, 503.5.10 forbids using the space left around a liner or gas vent inside a masonry flue to vent another appliance or to supply combustion air.
