Excavation Versus Trench

Three downgrade rules decide most exam questions:
- Soil that would otherwise be Type A is not Type A if it is fissured, subject to vibration from traffic or pile driving, previously disturbed, or part of a sloped, layered system with layers dipping into the excavation at 4H:1V or steeper.
- Previously disturbed soil is at best Type B. A trench you cut and backfilled last week is previously disturbed soil, and so is most of a city street cross-section.

The 9-foot spread between Type A and Type C is exactly why a wrong soil call turns into a fatality - and why a trench box is usually cheaper than sloping in a Maryland street where you own the pavement restoration.
Worked example - how many ladders?
A trench is 5 feet deep and 90 feet long. The 25-foot lateral-travel limit means each ladder serves 25 feet in each direction, a 50-foot span. A ladder at the 25-foot station covers 0 through 50; a ladder at the 75-foot station covers 50 through 100. Two ladders satisfy 1926.651(c)(2). Extend that trench to 120 feet and you need three.

The Four Protective Systems
- Sloping - cutting the walls back to the maximum allowable slope for the soil type.
- Benching - cutting horizontal steps into the walls. Appendix B provides simple and multiple benching configurations for Type A and Type B soil only; Type C soil must be sloped, shored, or shielded, never benched.
- Shoring - hydraulic, pneumatic, timber, or screw jacks bearing against the walls to prevent soil movement.
- Shielding - a trench box, which does not prevent a cave-in but protects the workers inside it.
Shield rules generate their own exam items. Competent-Person and Site Duties
1926.651(k)(1) requires daily inspections of the excavation, the adjacent areas, and the protective systems by a competent person - before the start of work, as needed throughout the shift, and after every rainstorm or other hazard-increasing occurrence. Where the competent person finds evidence of a possible cave-in, protective-system failure, hazardous atmosphere, or other hazard, exposed employees must be removed until the necessary precautions are taken.
