Register & Pass State Exam
Register at least 30 days before your chosen exam date (qualification and the pre-assessment are due 37 days before). Take the 4-hour computer-based exam at LSU in Baton Rouge (scaled score of 70 to pass).
Complete Commission Process
Obtain a $50,000 notary surety bond or personal surety bond, submit your oath of office and official signature form to the Secretary of State, and pay the $35 commission filing fee.
Can You Take the Louisiana Notary Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must be Louisiana resident (citizen or legal alien) AND registered voter in parish of commission
- •Must complete Notary Exam Pre-Assessment before registering for state exam
- •Pre-assessment is an evaluation with no minimum score; it is mandatory but only needs to be taken once
- •Licensed Louisiana attorneys exempt from pre-assessment and exam
- •Exams are given at LSU in Baton Rouge at least twice a year (2026 sessions have been held several times a month)
- •Qualify and complete the pre-assessment at least 37 days before the exam; register for the exam at least 30 days before
- •Non-attorneys must post a $50,000 notary surety bond or personal surety bond (from February 1, 2026; errors and omissions insurance is no longer an alternative)
- •Commission is for life (Attorney General Opinion 1940-42)
