The brand name, trade name, or product name is the manufacturer's marketing name on the front panel. Two jugs can share an active ingredient and still be different products with different rates, sites, surfactants, and ornamental plant lists. Your Rule 40-21-5 record should identify the product actually applied, not a sister brand you used last year.
The common name is the accepted short name of the active ingredient (the chemical that does the pesticidal job). Exam items like to show a cotton insecticide whose brand is unfamiliar but whose common name matches a product you already know. Same common name does not automatically mean same Directions for Use. Formulation, other ingredients, and EPA-accepted sites still differ by EPA Registration Number.
The chemical name describes the molecule (often a long IUPAC-style string). You rarely say it over a radio, but you may see it in the ingredient statement or on an SDS. Do not confuse the chemical name with the brand, and do not assume a "2,4-D" conversation authorizes every 2,4-D product on peaches, pecans, or turf.
Ingredient statement, type of pesticide, and net contents
The ingredient statement lists each active ingredient by accepted name and percent by weight. Other ingredients (still often taught as inert ingredients) appear as a combined percentage. Active plus other must equal 100 percent. Inerts are not "safe fillers." Solvents, emulsifiers, and carriers can drive odor, phytotoxicity, and fire hazard even when they are not named one-by-one.
Liquid labels often also state pounds of active ingredient per gallon, which is what you use when converting a broadcast rate. Dry labels use the percent active and the net weight of the bag. Net contents tell you how much product is in that container so you can plan mix loads without guessing.
The label also states the type of pesticide (herbicide, insecticide, fungicide, defoliant, adulticide, and so on) and the name and address of the manufacturer or registrant. Many labels add an emergency telephone number for poisoning or spill guidance. Those identifiers do not replace the EPA Registration Number or Establishment Number taught in the previous section.
Keep Out of Reach of Children is the child-hazard warning on registered pesticide labels. It is not a substitute for a signal word, and it is not optional storage advice for a Tift County mix pad that also has a break room.
Signal words and toxicity categories I–IV
Signal words describe acute (short-term, single-dose) toxicity of the formulated product, not the technical active ingredient alone and not chronic effects from years of low exposure. EPA assigns the word from the most severe route among oral, dermal, inhalation, eye irritation, and skin irritation (40 CFR 156.64). If a turf herbicide is only slightly toxic if swallowed but causes irreversible eye damage, the front panel still reads DANGER.

DANGER-POISON is not a louder version of WARNING. The skull and crossbones and the word POISON are required when the product is Category I because of oral, dermal, or inhalation toxicity. DANGER without those extras usually means corrosive eye or skin hazard. Do not skip PPE on a DANGER turf product because "it isn't a poison." Irreversible eye damage is still Category I.
Spanish signal-word companions (PELIGRO, AVISO) may appear with the English word. They do not change the category.
Approximate oral LD50 bands used in Core teaching (mg/kg):

Precautionary statements: people, first aid, and PPE
Immediately after the signal word, labels carry Hazards to Humans and Domestic Animals. Route statements match the category: Fatal if swallowed or Fatal if inhaled on many Category I systemic products; May be fatal on Category II; Harmful if swallowed or Avoid contact on Category III. Specific action statements tell you what to do: do not breathe spray mist, wash after handling, remove contaminated clothing. Protective clothing and equipment statements in this box are required PPE for handlers unless a more specific WPS or Directions-for-Use exception applies. The statement of practical treatment (first aid) tells bystanders and handlers what to do now: rinse eyes, remove clothing, call poison control, have the label with you. Follow that labeled first aid for use-related exposure. The SDS may add occupational-medicine detail; it does not let you skip a labeled "do not induce vomiting" instruction. Later safety chapters cover poisoning versus heat stress. For this domain, know where first aid lives and that it is enforceable labeling.
Other precautionary lines may address user safety beyond the acute box: wash before eating, do not apply this product in a way that will contact workers or other persons, either directly or through drift. Those sentences are how EPA writes bystander protection onto the jug.
Environmental hazards
Environmental hazards protect fish, aquatic invertebrates, birds, mammals, and pollinators — and they are as binding as the rate table. Typical lines: this pesticide is toxic to fish or toxic to bees; do not apply directly to water (except labeled aquatic uses); drift and runoff may be hazardous to aquatic organisms; do not apply while bees are foraging. A coastal Category 41 mosquito adulticide can be toxic to bees and aquatic life even when the signal word is CAUTION. A Category 24 herbicide can still be labeled toxic to fish in ornamental ponds.
Special toxicity statements may single out wildlife groups (for example, extremely toxic to birds). Groundwater or surface-water advisories tell you when soil, sinkholes, or irrigation return flow make a Georgia Coastal Plain sand a poor site for a mobile product. Those sentences are not "extra reading." Applying a bee-toxic insecticide to blooming pecans, or allowing a cotton mix to reach a farm pond, is label misuse when the environmental box forbids it.
Physical or chemical hazards
Physical or chemical hazards address fire, explosion, and chemical incompatibility of the concentrate or spray mixture: flammable, vapor may flash, corrosive to metal, spray solutions of this product should be mixed, stored, and applied only in stainless steel, fiberglass, and plastic. A mix-load fire on a peanut farm is still a label event if you smoked next to a flammable emulsifiable concentrate. Do not store an oxidizer next to a fuel tank because the SDS is in the office and the jug is in the truck.

Look for use classification (some adulticides are RUP), signal word, bee and aquatic statements, and a product type that says adulticide or ULV.
