Sensitive areas
A sensitive area is any place where living things—or drinking water—could be easily injured. Outdoor examples from Core, mapped onto Georgia work:
- School grounds, playgrounds, parks, and recreational fields (Category 24 and mosquito work).
- Apiaries (managed honey bee yards) and blooming forage.
- Wildlife refuges, wetlands, farm ponds, creeks, and irrigation reservoirs.
- Habitats of endangered or threatened species.
- Livestock lots, horse farms, and domestic-animal areas.
- Ornamental plantings, public gardens, and sensitive food or feed crops.
- Indoor interiorscapes (malls, conservatories) and food-storage or food-preparation areas.
A sensitive area is not automatically a no-spray zone. Mosquito-control (Category 41) and some regulated-pest programs exist because the sensitive site has a pest. The operating rules are: read the label for special precautions, leave untreated buffers when you can, use the least-hazardous effective product, and do not treat a larger site sloppily just because a playground sits in one corner of a campus.

Endangered and threatened species and Bulletins Live! Two
An endangered species is in danger of extinction across all or a significant portion of its range. A threatened species is likely to become endangered. Removing one species can cascade through a food web; EPA’s Endangered Species Protection Program is how pesticide labels carry that federal duty down to the applicator.
Older training talked about “county bulletins.” The current delivery system is EPA’s web application Bulletins Live! Two (BLT). Endangered Species Protection Bulletins set geographically specific pesticide use limitations to protect listed species and designated critical habitat. Limits may include buffers, timing windows, rate caps, runoff/erosion mitigation, or a prohibition in a mapped Pesticide Use Limitation Area (PULA).
