Functions of the nail unit

The nail unit (nail apparatus) is the hard plate plus the soft tissues that produce it, attach it, and seal it. Functions you should be able to state on a theory item include:

  • Counterforce for touch. The plate gives the fingertip pad something firm to press against. Clients notice clumsiness when a plate is avulsed even if the skin looks intact.
  • Grasp and scratch. A shaped free edge helps pick up coins and peel tape. You shape that edge as a beautifying service; you do not claim a medical treatment.
  • Appearance. Visible plates communicate grooming. Cosmetic stain from dark polish is a plate-surface issue. Disease of the bed or matrix is not the same problem, and Chapter 6.3 will force that distinction.

Nail plate and free edge

The nail plate (nail body) is the hard, visible, keratinized surface you file, buff, and polish. It is compacted dead keratin. It contains no blood vessels and no nerves. A chip that stays inside the plate does not bleed. The pink color of a healthy fingernail is the nail bed showing through, not a blood supply inside the plate. Filing until the surface turns wet, raw, or sharply painful means you have left the plate.

The free edge is the distal plate that has grown past the fingertip. It looks whitish because it is no longer lying over the vascular bed. Trimming the free edge is ordinary manicure work if scissors or clippers do not nick the hyponychium or the fingertip skin. The free edge is not the growing factory. Clipping it does not create new cells; it only shortens cells the matrix already made weeks earlier.

Nail bed: where vessels and nerves actually are

The nail bed is the living skin under the plate from the distal edge of the lunula to the hyponychium. It is richly supplied with blood vessels and nerves. That pairing is an exam-classic fact: sensation and bleeding belong to the bed and other living parts, not the plate, not the grooves as if they were a separate blood-filled canal, and not a “nail wall” that candidates sometimes invent as the only vascular structure. The bed’s epidermis forms fine longitudinal ridges that help the plate stay attached. Trauma here can trap blood and produce a bruised nail. If the hyponychium seal is torn, pathogens can travel along the bed. Never use a sharp pusher as a shovel under the attached plate.

Matrix, lunula, and mantle

The matrix is the actively growing part of the nail. It sits in a pocket of dense tissue under the proximal nail fold. Matrix cells (onychocytes) divide, keratinize, and are pushed forward as new plate. A broad, healthy matrix tends to produce a wider, thicker plate. A scarred or destroyed matrix can produce a permanently thin, split, or ridged plate for every millimeter that grows afterward. The matrix itself has nerves, blood, and lymph, so injury there is painful and consequential.

The lunula is the whitish half-moon. It is the visible portion of the matrix. Thumbs show it most often; some healthy nails hide it under the eponychium. Do not sand the lunula to “make it grow.” Polish does not create a lunula.

The mantle is the deep proximal fold of skin that covers and protects the matrix. Many standard nail-technology textbooks treat mantle and proximal nail fold as the same protective pocket. When a client asks you to “cut everything back so the moon shows,” they are often pointing at living mantle and eponychium, not dead cuticle.

Eponychium, cuticle, perionychium, folds, grooves, hyponychium

The eponychium is living skin at the base of the visible plate. It covers the matrix like a hood. You may soften and gently push it. You may not cut it as if it were hangnail paper.

The cuticle is the thin dead tissue the eponychium deposits onto the plate. Dead cuticle can be eased off the plate after a soak or oil. Living eponychium cannot. Theory items punish candidates who use the two words as synonyms.

The perionychium (also called paronychium) is the living tissue that surrounds the nail, especially along the lateral borders. Remember the name now; paronychia in Section 6.3 is inflammation of this tissue.

Lateral nail folds (nail walls) overlap the sides of the plate and help hold it in its track. Nail grooves are the slits or tracks along which the plate grows. Jamming a metal implement into a groove can injure the fold and invite infection. Grooves are anatomy, not a place to scrape product until you see blood.

The hyponychium is thickened epidermis under the free edge. It is a waterproof seal between plate and bed. Aggressive “cleaning under the nail” with a sharp tool rips that seal and can start onycholysis or infection. Light cleansing of the underside of a free edge that has already grown past the seal is not the same as digging toward the attached bed.

Exam traps and a salon scenario

Trap: pink plate means the plate has blood. Pink is the bed showing through. Trap: cuticle means any skin at the base. Cuticle is dead; eponychium is living. Trap: the free edge is the growing part because that is what you clip. Growth is produced in the matrix. Trap: lunula is optional decoration. It is visible matrix. Trap: grooves are empty plastic tracks. They border living folds.

Jordan, sitting the Arkansas manicurist written exams, has a client who wants “cuticle cuts” so the lunula looks longer. The client pinches when the pusher slips toward the proximal fold and feels nothing while Jordan files the free edge. That difference is anatomy, not fussiness: living eponychium and nearby matrix tissue have nerves; the keratinized plate does not. Jordan eases only dead cuticle, leaves living folds intact, and does not sand the lunula.
