Maintenance is half of Domain 7
Application without troubleshooting is how overlays look fine at the door and fail on the written item. NIC Domain 7 tests maintenance and removal, not only a pretty first set. A fill is adding product to new growth on an overlay that is still sealed to the plate. If the overlay has lifted, cracked into a pocket, gone green, or is sitting on angry skin, you are not filling. You are deciding whether to remove and whether to refer.
Lifting, peeling, and flooding
Lifting starts at a free edge, sidewall, or cuticle line where adhesion failed. Usual causes: oil or lotion left on the plate; skipped dehydrator; primer on skin instead of keratin, or primer skipped when the system required it; flooding the eponychium so product cured on living tissue and shrank; under-cured gel; water under dip; trauma (a door, a keyboard, a pick). A hairline grow-out gap at two weeks can be a true fill after you file the junction and re-prep new keratin. A hollow you can click with a file is a pocket. Pockets collect water. Water under an overlay is how greenies start.
Peeling in sheets means the film formed but never grabbed keratin: the whole overlay lets go. That is prep and contamination, not “she has oily nails so we skip dehydrator forever.” Re-prep after a full removal. Do not glue the peeled shell back on.
Flooding is product too far onto living skin — runny gel, wet acrylic, or dip resin. Flooded product becomes a lift ring, an allergy patch, or both. The fix is a drier bead or a thinner gel coat and a brush that stays on the plate, not a story that the client “twitched.”
Product too wet or too dry
Too wet (gel that self-levels into the fold, dip resin that runs, acrylic with a heavy liquid ratio) floods, shrinks, can spike heat, and leaves leftover monomer or oligomer against skin. Too dry (gel dragged into streaks, dip starved of resin so powder looks chalky, acrylic crumbly) traps air, will not bond, and files off in chunks. Medium, glossy, controllable product is the target. Wet/dry ratio is a chemistry interaction you already met in Chapter 8; here it shows up as a failed enhancement.
Bubbling, wrinkling, white spots, yellowing
Bubbling locks air in a cured film: shaken gel bottles, a brush stabbed into a thick coat, rushed dip dunks, or powder dropped onto a gap. File it off and redo the layer. Do not top-coat bubbles and call them texture.
Wrinkling of thin gel color often means the layer was too thick and the surface skinned in the lamp while the underside was still moving, or the lamp dumped heat into a film that had not leveled. Flexing a hand out of the lamp mid-cycle can wrinkle a soft coat. Thin coats, full time, specified lamp.
White spots can be trapped moisture, air, dip activator bloom, or incomplete wetting of powder. They are not automatically leukonychia from matrix injury, but a white spot from a hammer is a medical-history question, not a dip-activator question. Do not drill white spots into the bed.
Yellowing of an enhancement can come from UV aging, smoking, over-cure, staining from dark color without a stain-blocking layer, or old product. Yellow is not a license to bleach the natural plate with a callus softener. If yellow sits under a lift with moisture, think contamination and remove, not a French polish cover.
Breaking at the stress point
The stress area is where the free edge leaves the nail bed — the zone that needs an apex (a slight high point of structure). Overlays snap there when the apex is missing, filed flat, or placed too far back over the lunula; when sidewalls are thin; when extra length adds leverage; or when the C-curve is collapsed. Repair is rebuild the architecture after you check for lift and moisture, not a drop of glue on a hinge that is already wet underneath.
Allergic contact dermatitis
Allergic contact dermatitis is an immune reaction, often to HEMA and other acrylates in gels and primers, or to cyanoacrylate in dip and tip glue. Irritation burns where a harsh product sat on day one. Allergy can wait weeks, then flare from a tiny smear. Signs: itching, redness, vesicles around the nails, sometimes eyelids after the client or technician touches their face. Chapter 8 separated irritation from sensitization. Here the service decision is blunt: stop putting that chemistry on the person. Do not “try a little of a new brand” as a diagnostic test. Gloves and no-touch technique protect you; once you are sensitized, your career is the next client. Refer to a medical provider for diagnosis. You may remove product that is clearly the trigger, using soak or file methods that do not shred an already angry plate.
NIC Domain 1 already asks you to identify adverse reactions. Domain 7 is where that reaction is sitting on an enhancement.
Greenies: Pseudomonas under a lift
A green-black stain under a lifted overlay is the classic salon picture of Pseudomonas (often taught as Pseudomonas aeruginosa) living in a moist pocket between plastic and plate. People call it a greenie. It is not a pigment you seal in with more builder. It is not “just a stain, fill it.”
Refuse the fill. Remove the enhancement. File or soak according to the chemistry so you can see the plate. Do not grind a wet infected-looking nail until it burns. If there is pain, swelling, drainage, spreading redness, or a plate that is separating, refer to a medical provider. You are not prescribing antibiotics. You are not bleaching a suspected infection with salon peroxide as a medical protocol. After removal, if the plate is intact and the client has no referral signs, a natural-nail finish and a future enhancement only when the surface is dry and sealed are the cosmetic path. A leftover green tint on keratin can persist after the pocket is gone; that stain alone is not permission to overlay a still-wet lift.
Filling over a greenie traps organisms and moisture. That is the exam answer they want: do not.
When to refuse a fill and remove
Remove rather than fill when any of these are true:
- Lifting that creates a hollow or a click
- Green, brown, or black discoloration under product
- Signs of infection or an open sore at the eponychium or sulcus
- Spreading rash or vesicles that look like allergy
- Broken enhancement with a sharp edge cutting living skin
- Natural plate already paper-thin, onycholytic, or painful
- Client asks you to “just glue it” over moisture, mold-looking film, or a smell
- You cannot see the plate well enough to know it is a cosmetic surface
A small, sealed grow-out line with intact adhesion, no discoloration, and healthy skin is the fill you were trained to do: file the junction, dehydrate new keratin, apply matching chemistry, keep product off skin, cure or activate as that system requires.
Blood during a file still follows Chapter 4. A lift that has been picked until it bleeds is a blood-exposure event plus a removal, not a French fill.
Ventilation and dust
Arkansas Cosmetology and Body Art Rules require establishments to remain free of excessive heat, steam, vapors, smoke, and harmful fumes. Gel and dip troubleshooting includes the air you create while you fix the nail: acetone vapor during soak-off, cyanoacrylate during dip repair, and polymer-and-keratin dust from filing hard gel, dip, or acrylic. Use lids, local exhaust or salon ventilation that actually moves air, and electric-file habits from Chapter 10 (no dust cloud as a technique). Do not quote a fake “Arkansas gel dust subsection.” Quote the ventilation rule you actually have, then control the source.
