1.1 Current Exam Facts

Quick Answer: The Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) exam from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is a 50-question, 3-hour, open-book multiple-choice test. Anyone 18 or older may sit; there is no education or experience prerequisite. NRPA’s current learning management system (LMS) exam product requires 39 correct answers out of 50 (78%). The 2025 Candidate Handbook explains scoring but does not publish a numeric cut score. The credential is valid for 5 years.

The AFO credential is the national operator certificate issued by NRPA under its National Certification Board (NCB). This section is the logistics briefing you need before you spend hours on chlorine math or pump curves: who owns the exam, how many items you will see, how long you have, what it costs, how you actually sit, and how the 50 items split across five domains. Who the credential is for

AFO is for people who operate public and commercial aquatic venues: municipal pools, water parks, school and campus natatoriums, parks-and-recreation tanks, hotel and homeowners-association contractors, and therapy or spa suites attached to a larger facility. Passing AFO does not replace a local operating permit. Your authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)—usually a county or state health department—still writes the chemical limits, inspection calendar, and closure rules you follow on the deck. Treat AFO as national operator literacy. Treat the AHJ as the agency that can shut your pool.

Eligibility in 2026

NRPA's Become an AFO page and the certification policies keep the gate simple:

• You must be 18 years of age or older.
• There is no education prerequisite. NRPA does not require a diploma, degree, or prior course in order to sit.
• There is no experience prerequisite. You need not document seasons as a manager.

That combination surprises people who came from licenses that demand internships. A first-season staff member who has turned 18 can sit the same 50 items as a director with 20 years of pumps and feeders. The open-book format then rewards the candidate who can find the right table in the current manual, not the candidate who claims unofficial inside weights.

In practice: Your director asks whether AFO is worth scheduling for an 18-year-old assistant who has never backwashed a filter. Eligibility is age, not tenure. The assistant can sit. Budget the $125 exam-only fee if you use the 2026 NRPA application, or a different amount if you buy a hosted two-day course package. Either way, the assistant needs the current 8th-edition AFO Manual in the room.

Exam logistics at a glance

Confirm dates and fees on NRPA's site when you register. These are the current public facts as of 2026.

Two traps show up in study groups. First, a practice website's bank size is not the official exam length. The scored AFO exam is 50 items. Second, NRPA does not publish a current national pass rate (the share of candidates who pass this year), and the 2025 handbook does not give a numeric cut score. The current LMS product states 39/50 (78%). Do not invent another cut score or a scaled-score table, and do not treat 39 as the number of chemistry items—that number is 12.

How the exam is delivered

You cannot treat AFO as a walk-in computer exam at a retail testing center. NRPA controls delivery in three related ways:

1. End of a two-day course. Authorized hosts run in-person, virtual, or blended AFO courses. The exam is commonly given at the end of that course, on paper or online depending on the host.
2. Approved proctor. Candidates who are not in a packaged course apply for the exam-only sitting and test under an NRPA-approved proctor.
3. Online with webcam. Remote sittings use the NRPA LMS plus a Zoom proctor session. A working webcam is required.

PSI Services develops questions; it does not run walk-in AFO seats

PSI Services is contracted to help develop exam questions. NRPA and the NCB own the exam. That contract does not turn AFO into a walk-in PSI test-center product. If a coworker tells you to just book a PSI seat the way some other pool exams are scheduled, that path is not how AFO is administered.

Online products typically show a score immediately. Certificate timing depends on path: the 2025 handbook describes roughly 2–4 weeks after a course sitting; the 2026 exam-only application describes roughly 1–2 weeks. Become an AFO also notes that a Latin American Spanish paper-and-pencil form is available on request. Always bring the government-issued identification required by the candidate handbook, and confirm any proctor-specific identification instructions before your appointment.

Scoring: 39/50 (78%) on the current NRPA LMS product

Keep the sources distinct so you do not turn an unpublished number into a handbook rule:

• The current NRPA LMS certification-exam product lists 39/50, or 78%, as the passing requirement.
• The 2025 AFO Exam Candidate Handbook explains that the passing standard is set through expert judgment, but it does not publish a numeric cut score.

Use 39/50 when describing the current LMS product. Do not claim that the handbook prints 78%, do not add a third cut score, and do not assume every paper form prints 39/50 on the cover.

There is no penalty for wrong answers. A blank response cannot become a point. Answer every item, even if you flag it to revisit. The next section turns that rule into a time plan.

The five 2025 content domains

The 2025 handbook assigns every scored item to one of five competencies. The item counts sum to 50. This split is the study map for the rest of the guide.

What those weights mean on a study calendar

Water Chemistry and Disinfection (12 items, 24%) is the largest domain. Expect testing methods, parts-per-million math, sanitizer species, pH and alkalinity, combined chlorine, and oxidizer choices.

Mechanical Systems and Operations (10 items, 20%) covers the room behind the pool: collection (gutters, skimmers, main drains), circulation and turnover, pumps, filters, heaters, meters, and feeders.

Health and Safety (11 items, 22%) is not lifeguarding trivia. It includes recreational water illness, incident records, signage, inspections, legal liability, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) healthy-swimming guidance and the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) chemical rules, and the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (spell Graeme).

Operations (6 items, 12%) is the smallest slice. It still spans daily routines, indoor air quality, weatherizing, renovation and design decisions, and amenity types (water parks, spray pads, slides, features, spas). Six items is enough to fail you if you skip the chapter.

Maintenance (11 items, 22%) matches Health and Safety in size. Preventive maintenance programs, documentation, basin and deck care, mechanical-room housekeeping, seasonal shutdown, troubleshooting, and purchasing all sit here.

A balanced plan studies chemistry hardest, then gives Health and Safety and Maintenance almost equal time, then mechanical systems, then operations. Skipping maintenance because it sounds like janitorial work discards 22% of the exam. Studying only chemistry because that is the hard part leaves 76% of the items under-prepared. Health and Safety plus Maintenance together are 22 items—44% of the exam—before you count mechanical systems.

If a blog, a Facebook group, or an old PDF still shows the former four-domain 35/25/25/15 outline, that outline is retired. Use the five-domain 2025 weights in the table above.

Five-year term and renewal

AFO is valid for 5 years. Before expiration you must either:

• pass the current AFO exam, or
• complete 2.0 continuing education units (CEUs) in aquatic operations or management.

AFO instructors renew by the CEU option only. They do not recertify by sitting the exam. If you are a candidate and not an instructor, either path is open to you.

Fees and the 8th-edition manual

The 2026 NRPA exam-only application lists $125 for the exam. That figure is the NRPA exam-only fee, not a promise that every host charges $125 for a full course. Course packages (instruction plus exam) vary by host.

You will test with the current 8th-edition AFO Manual. NRPA's shop lists $55 for members and $70 for nonmembers. The 8th edition shipped 2024-10-01 with a new exam. Older editions are the wrong book for an open-book sitting.
