Shared physics: why amenities punish chemistry

A 400,000-gallon competition pool can absorb a birthday party. An 800-gallon spa cannot. Neither can a spray-pad tank that holds a few thousand gallons while a hundred toddlers rinse sunscreen, dirt, and feces off their feet. The operator pattern is the same across 4E:

  • Higher bather density. More people per gallon means more urea, sweat, saliva, feces, and lotion per turnover.
  • More organics. Features aerosolize water, dump buckets slap a film of biofilm into the catch pool, and spray pads wash shoes.

A water park is a campus of aquatic venues that share staff, sometimes share filters, and always share a reputation when someone gets sick. Typical pieces: a wave pool, a lazy river, multi-flume slides with catch or runout pools, a children’s play structure with dump buckets, a spray pad, and one or more spas. Each piece can have its own turnover row in a MAHC-style table and still dump into a common surge pit.

Multiple bodies and shared treatment

Draw the piping. If two attractions share a filter, they share outbreaks, hyperchlorination clocks, and closure. If they are hydraulically separate, they still share lifeguards, restrooms, and the operator’s time. A park with six basins and one test kit used once at the “main” pool is not operating six basins.

Secondary disinfection (UV/ozone) is common on children’s areas and pads because those are increased-risk aquatic venues in MAHC language: young children, diaper use, and lots of swallowed spray. Secondary treatment does not replace a residual sanitizer in the water that touches skin and noses.

Wave pools

Wave machines move huge water volumes and create a surge problem that makes a gutter tank look small. Bather load concentrates at the beach end. Clarity still has a go/no-go: if you cannot see the bottom or the outlets in the trough, you do not run waves for the public. Wave action can hide a victim in the trough and can slam weak swimmers. Lifeguards own surveillance patterns for the wave cycle. You own chemistry, outlets, and the decision to kill the wave machine when water quality or a missing cover says so. Lazy rivers

A river is a channel with a current. Inlets and propulsion jets create entrapment and hair-entanglement points if covers fail. Current also moves a distressed swimmer away from the last guard. Depth is often deceptively uniform. Chemical demand is high because people sit in tubes for an hour and urinate. Turnover in the MAHC activity/river row is commonly 2 hours or less. Dead spots behind islands still need inlet aiming (Chapter 6).

Slides: dispatch is not disinfection

Dispatch is the ride rule: one rider or raft at a time, a signal between the top attendant and the landing, a clear catch pool, and a stop if the landing is not empty. That is mostly a lifeguarding / attraction-attendant system. The operator still owns:

  • Landing-pool or runout clarity and residual. A cloudy catch pool hides a head-first arrival.
  • Flow to the flume. Many slides use a separate ride pump that is not the filter pump. The water on the slide must still be filtered and disinfected water, not a raw-basin shortcut that bypasses treatment. If the ride pump takes from an untreated trough, you have built a biofilm hose.
  • Weirs, mats, and joints that can cut or entrap.
  • Dispatch shutdown when chemistry, covers, or weather (Chapter 12 lightning) say stop.

Typical MAHC-style plunge / runout-slide turnover is 1 hour or less. Confirm the AHJ. A slide tower is also a fall-from-height and a lightning magnet; those are EAP issues, not a reason to skip the catch-pool DPD test.

Lifeguards can run a perfect dispatch on a dirty filter. That is still an operator failure.

Spray pads and splash pads

CDC describes splash pads (interactive fountains, spray parks, wet decks) as venues that spray or jet water on users. Two hydraulic families exist:

  1. Recirculating. Spray falls to a sloped pad, drains to an underground tank, then goes through filtration and disinfection before it is sprayed again. A separate feature pump often hits the nozzles on a user-activated manifold.
  2. Single-pass. Potable water sprays once and goes to waste (typically sewer). There is no on-site filter. Stagnant water still sits in nozzles and laterals overnight.

CDC’s Healthy Swimming pages are blunt: pads are not always regulated as aquatic venues, and inadequately disinfected recirculating pads and decorative fountains used as pads have been tied to fatal Naegleria fowleri (primary amebic meningoencephalitis) infections in young children (including cases in 2020–2023 in Texas and Arkansas). No standing water on the pad reduces drowning. Naegleria cares about water up the nose. Treat the tank, the laterals, and the nozzles as the pool.

Biofilm, nozzles, UV, drains

Piping that only flows when a child hits a button is an incubator. Biofilm on tank walls, laterals, and nozzle interiors protects bacteria and amoebae from a fleeting chlorine residual. Operator work:

  • Keep a measurable residual in the tank on a schedule the AHJ recognizes, including days the pad looks “off.”
  • Inspect and clean the tank (MAHC-style interactive-play language expects a tank you can access).
  • Clean and descale nozzles; clogged nozzles change spray patterns, pond water, and tell you the laterals are dirty.
  • Run filtration and secondary UV when the MAHC-style increased-risk rules (or your AHJ) require them. Outdoor UV also means sunlight destroying chlorine — test the tank, not the nearest lap pool.
  • Confirm pad drains prevent ponding. Standing water on a “no-standing-water” pad is a design or maintenance failure: clogged trench drains, wrong slope, or a failed feature that puddles.

Some pads draw from an adjacent pool instead of a dedicated tank. Then the pool’s fecal event is the pad’s fecal event. Some pads are separate. Draw the piping before you write the contamination plan.

Winterization pointer

Blowing out laterals, draining tanks, and nozzle caps for freeze are Chapter 16 shutdown work. Chapter 12 is in-season freeze watches on a pad still in public use. Do not mix those jobs. A half-drained underground tank in January is a structural and public-health mess, not a shortcut.

Water features: bubble benches, geysers, dump buckets

Bubble benches (air or air/water seats), geysers (vertical jets from the floor or pad), and dump buckets look like toys. Hydraulically they are small venues attached to a bigger one.

  • Bubble benches and air induction. Air blowers are not circulation pumps. MAHC-style spa language still applies wherever air is injected: the air intake must not pull chemical fumes or vehicle exhaust, and the system must not allow water to back up into electrical equipment. A bench of bubbles in a leisure pool is a biofilm shelf and an aerosol generator (Legionella thinking from Chapter 9). If the air bar is also a suction fitting, it needs a legal cover.
  • Geysers. Floor jets are inlets or feature discharges. Kids sit on them. That creates suction-entrapment and evisceration geometry if the fitting can be blocked. Treat every floor feature as a VGB-class look: cover listed, fasteners present, not a homemade grate. Geysers also launch water that never saw the surface skimmer — another reason turnover and inlet aiming matter.
  • Dump buckets. The bucket fills, tips, and throws a large slug of water onto people and into a shallow catch area. Expect sudden load: dilution in the splash zone, extra organics from the bucket’s interior film, extra splash-out (makeup and chemical loss), and a crowd that arrives for the dump on a timer. Hot tubs and spas

Temperature, turnover, demand

The 2024 MAHC sets a maximum aquatic-venue temperature of 104°F (40°C) and repeats 104°F for spas. CDC inspection guidance uses the same cap to prevent hyperthermia. Many state codes copy it. Label it typical/AHJ — your ordinance might be 102°F or might use a different thermometer accuracy — but do not treat 110°F as hospitality. Measure with a thermometer the operator and the bather can actually read.

Hot water 93–104°F sits on the MAHC spa/therapy/exercise row that demands 0.5 hours or less turnover and secondary treatment. Cooler therapy or exercise water may be allowed longer turnovers at lighter loads in that same model table. Follow the AHJ. The operator lesson is unchanged: small + hot + crowded = test often.

Disinfectant demand is ugly: heat off-gasses chlorine, aeration strips more, and people sit still producing sweat and urine. Bromine is common on spas in some jurisdictions; whatever the sanitizer, the residual must be there. Combined chlorine climbs fast. A spa is the first vessel to show that Saturday’s party exceeded oxidation.

Air induction, dump practice, Pseudomonas, clock and timer

Air blowers make the “hot tub experience” and also aerosolize whatever is in the water. Intake location matters. Weekly complete drain-and-clean is common practice in many agencies because dissolved solids, biofilm, and organics accumulate in a tiny volume. The 2024 MAHC requires a means to drain for frequent draining and cleaning; it does not, in the public excerpts used here, replace your AHJ’s dump schedule. Do not invent a national NRPA “dump every Tuesday” statute. Do have a written frequency your health department accepts, and do not skip the scrub of the waterline and the suction covers.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the classic hot-tub folliculitis organism taught in Chapter 9: skin contact in hot, poorly disinfected, often under-circulated water. Legionella rides aerosols. Crypto still matters if people soak after a diarrheal pool visit. Spa operation is infection control, not hospitality.

MAHC-style spa signs include: maximum 104°F; children under 5 and people using alcohol or drowsiness-causing drugs shall not use the spa; pregnant people and people with heart disease or similar conditions should consult a clinician; children under 14 supervised by an adult; do not use alone if no lifeguards. A clock must be visible to spa bathers. The hydrotherapy jet system connects to a minute timer that does not exceed 15 minutes, located out of a bather’s reach, so a dizzy person cannot keep resetting jets from the water. Many agencies post 15-minute rest language with that timer. If the timer is jumpered, you have a finding and a medical risk.

Emergency shutoff for spa jets and the circulation pump should be obvious from the deck. Depth markers still apply; MAHC asks for a minimum of two spa depth markers regardless of size.

Therapy pools

Therapy and rehabilitation pools are often warmer than lap water and cooler than a recreation spa, used by people with open wounds, catheters, weakened immunity, or limited mobility. MAHC lists therapy pools with wading pools and interactive play as increased-risk aquatic venues. That is why secondary treatment and aggressive hygiene show up in model language.

Operator culture, not just chemistry:

  • Accessibility is the product. Lifts, sloped entries, and transfer equipment must work for every therapy session, not “when the rec pool’s lift is free” (Chapter 10). Water temperature must match the clinician’s protocol and the code cap.
  • Infection control is explicit. Pre-swim hygiene, exclusion of diarrhea, and attention to open wounds are not optional courtesy. Staff may need a tighter fecal plan and a faster close because the user group is not a swim team.
  • Air and heat. Warm water plus indoor air is a Chapter 12 chloramine problem in miniature. Therapy clients may have pulmonary issues; “the room always smells like a pool” is not an acceptable design leftover.
  • Turnover and secondary treatment follow the temperature/load row, not the lap-pool row.

A therapy pool that shares a filter with a public splash pad is a programming decision that should scare you. If piping already does that, the contamination plan must close both.

You do not take one DPD from the wave trough and walk away. The spa residual is already near the floor. The pad tank is cloudy and a nozzle is a dribble. You shorten the test interval, pull the spa if it cannot hold residual, kill the pad until the tank is treated and nozzles are cleared, and you leave the wave pool open only if it is hydraulically separate and still legal. That is 4E in one hour.
