The Class 6 Road Test and GDL Restrictions

Passing the knowledge test unlocks supervised practice. The Class 6 road test is the final licensing gate before you may operate a motorcycle on a public roadway without a supervising rider.

Booking and Vehicle Requirements

• Schedule online through the Government of Alberta road-test scheduler or at a registry agent.
• Provide your own motorcycle for the test, with valid insurance and registration.
• The examiner checks mechanical safety before the test; an unsafe motorcycle ends the attempt.
• If you take the road test on a three-wheeled motorcycle, Alberta.ca states your Class 6 licence will be restricted to three-wheeled motorcycles only.

Test Format (Rider's Guide + Alberta.ca)

The Rider's Guide describes the road test as lasting about 60 minutes in traffic, starting and finishing at the registry agent office. The examiner follows in another vehicle and assesses:

• Equipment and motorcycle fitness
• Rules of the road, signalling, left/right turns, and intersection judgement
• Balance, road position, and speed control

There are routine curb stops during the test for scoring. Alberta.ca currently tells candidates to ensure their cell phone is equipped with earbuds for examiner communication. Follow the instructions given when you book—communication equipment policy can be updated by Examinations and Licensing.

Passing does not automatically reclassify your licence card. Go to a registry, pay the reclassification fee, and update the licence.

Class 6-GDL Conditions

If you held Class 7 and then passed the Class 6 road test, you typically receive Class 6-GDL and remain in the probationary stage. Rider's Guide GDL probationary conditions include:

• Probationary rider for a minimum of two years
• Suspended if you accumulate eight or more demerit points
• Zero alcohol and/or drug level when riding
• Cannot serve as a supervisor to a learning rider

If you passed Class 5 before Class 6, you may hold a combination Class 5/6 GDL licence with the same GDL restrictions until you exit.

Exiting the GDL Program

Advanced road testing for GDL exit was eliminated effective April 1, 2023. To exit GDL, the Rider's Guide requires:

1. Be at least 18 years of age
2. Be suspension-free during the last twelve consecutive months of the probationary stage

You can reduce the probationary stage by up to six months if you successfully complete an approved driver training course that adds condition code U to your driving record and all other eligibility requirements are met.

Upon exiting GDL you:

• Move from Class 6-GDL to full Class 6 (non-GDL)
• Increase allowed demerits before suspension
• Remove the zero alcohol/drug tolerance condition tied to GDL
• Qualify as a supervisor for a learning rider

Keep a clean record through the final twelve months. A late suspension resets the suspension-free clock and delays full Class 6 privileges.

What Examiners Watch For

Expect continuous evaluation of observation habits (mirror checks and shoulder checks), speed choice relative to posted limits and conditions, and space management around parked cars, left-turning vehicles, and intersections. Low-speed balance failures, late signals, missing shoulder checks before lane changes, and freezing at gaps are common reasons candidates lose points. Dropping the motorcycle, committing a dangerous action, or forcing another road user to take evasive action typically ends the test.

Bring weather-appropriate protective gear. While only the approved helmet is the universal statutory equipment rule for on-road riding, examiners may refuse an unsafe candidate presentation, and the Rider's Guide repeatedly ties eye protection, sturdy footwear, and abrasion-resistant clothing to real crash survival.

After a Fail or a Pass

If unsuccessful, schedule another appointment the same way you booked the first test and keep practising under legal supervision. Each road-test attempt has a fee. If successful, complete registry reclassification promptly—riding as if you already hold Class 6 before the licence class is updated can create enforcement problems.

Three-Wheel and Communication Details

Alberta.ca is explicit that a road test completed on a three-wheeled motorcycle produces a Class 6 licence restricted to three-wheeled motorcycles. If you later want two-wheel privileges, you must meet the testing requirements for that vehicle type. Confirm examiner communication instructions when booking: Alberta.ca currently emphasizes a phone with earbuds, while older Rider's Guide wording describes one-way radios. Connecting GDL Exit to Real Schedules

Count the two-year probationary clock carefully. If you complete approved training and receive condition code U, confirm with a registry agent how the up-to-six-month reduction applies to your record. Do not assume classroom attendance alone shortens GDL until the condition code appears. Track suspensions: any suspension in the final twelve months of probation resets the suspension-free requirement even if you are already 18.
