The Class 6 Licensing Pathway

In Alberta, riding a motorcycle on a public roadway without a supervising rider requires a Class 6 (or Class 6-GDL) driver's licence. The Class 6 knowledge test is the theory gate before the road test. Official study sources are the Government of Alberta Rider's Guide (motorcycles, mopeds, and power-assisted bicycles) and the Driver's Guide (cars and light trucks). This section follows those sources plus Alberta.ca Class 6 licensing pages—not third-party handbooks.

Eligibility to Obtain Class 6 (Alberta.ca)

Alberta.ca states that to get a Class 6 motorcycle licence you must:

1. Be at least 16 years old.
2. Have at minimum a Class 7 learner's licence for one year.
3. Pass the Class 6 knowledge test.
4. Pass the Class 6 road test before riding without a supervising rider.

Pathway variations Alberta.ca describes:

• Already hold a full Class 5 licence: take the Class 6 knowledge and road tests.
• Hold Class 5 or Class 7: take the Class 6 knowledge and road tests (Class 7 holders must also meet the one-year Class 7 baseline).
• No Class 5 or Class 7 yet: complete Class 7 requirements first, then pass Class 6 knowledge and road tests; you are placed in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program before a full Class 6 licence.

If you are under 18, parental/guardian consent rules for licence upgrades still apply at the registry.

Learning to Ride Before the Road Test (Rider's Guide)

The Rider's Guide Before you ride section sets three conditions to qualify to learn to ride a motorcycle:

• Be 16 years of age or older
• Hold a valid driver's licence
• Have a supervising rider who holds a non-GDL Class 6 licence until you pass the Class 6 road test

Do not confuse motorcycle learning age with moped or power-bicycle ages. A 14-year-old may operate a moped with any Class 1–7 licence; that is not permission to learn Class 6 motorcycle operation at 14.

Recommended Rider Training Course

Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors strongly recommends that new riders take training from a licensed motorcycle rider training school. Courses typically teach balance and control skills such as:

• Weaving through markers (serpentine)
• Circles or figure-eights
• Slow straight-line riding
• Upshifting/downshifting into left and right turns
• Preparing gears for curves
• Hill starts
• Emergency stops and collision-avoidance steering/braking

Training does not replace the knowledge or road test, but it reduces the risk of learning basic clutch, throttle, and brake coordination in traffic.

The Class 6 Knowledge Test

From the Rider's Guide:

• 30 questions about motorcycle safe-driving practices, rules of the road, traffic-control signs and signals, and licensing information
• Taken on a computer at most Alberta registry agent offices
• Based on the Rider's Guide and the Driver's Guide
• A test permit must be purchased for each attempt
• Must be passed before the road test

From Alberta.ca Driver's knowledge test (applies to knowledge tests, including Class 6):

• Score required: 25 out of 30
• May be taken once per day
• Must be paid for each attempt
• Oral testing is available for Class 6 knowledge tests

The October 2025 Registry Agent Product Catalogue caps the standard all-classes knowledge test at a $5 government fee + $12 maximum service charge ($17 maximum). Oral/oral-assisted formats have a higher maximum.

Motorcycle, Moped, and Power Bicycle — Official Definitions

Special moped/power-bicycle rules include riding as far right as practical and no passenger if the operator is under 16. Demerit suspension at eight or more demerits applies to mopeds as listed in the Rider's Guide requirements table.

Registry Steps for the Knowledge Test

1. Bring your existing Class 7 or Class 5 licence to a registry agent.
2. Purchase a knowledge-test permit for that attempt.
3. Complete the 30-question computer test (25/30 to pass).
4. Keep the passed knowledge result available for road-test booking (road-test eligibility windows and vision checks are handled through registry/road-test processes).
