Learning Rider Supervision and Restrictions

After you pass the Class 6 knowledge test—and before you pass the Class 6 road test—you are a learning rider for motorcycle purposes. The Rider's Guide sets who may supervise you and which Class 7 / Class 5-GDL conditions apply while you practice.

Who May Supervise

The person supervising you must:

• Hold a valid full Class 6 driver's licence
• Not be in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program

Because exiting GDL requires being at least 18 and meeting clean-record rules, a full non-GDL Class 6 supervisor is an experienced, unrestricted Class 6 rider—not a Class 6-GDL holder.

Three Official Supervision Modes

The Rider's Guide allows the supervisor to provide continuous supervision by one of these methods:

1. Seated on the learning rider's motorcycle (as a passenger on a motorcycle equipped for two), or
2. Following on another motorcycle, or
3. Following in a vehicle

All three options are valid. Teaching that the supervisor can never sit on the learner's motorcycle is incorrect. The supervisor must still provide supervision at all times—physical presence in one of the three modes is required; Bluetooth coaching alone is not a substitute.

A learning rider who already holds Class 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 must still have a supervising rider for motorcycle practice until the Class 6 road test is passed.

Class 7 Learning Rider Restrictions

If the learning rider holds a Class 7 learner's licence, the Rider's Guide requires:

Night-time riding prohibition

Night-time for GDL motorcycle riders is:

• From midnight or one hour after sunset, whichever is earlier
• Until 5 a.m. or one hour before sunrise, whichever is later

That is not a simple fixed midnight–5:00 a.m. window on long summer evenings or short winter days. Sunset/sunrise lengthens or shortens the banned period.

Zero alcohol and drugs

Drug and blood-alcohol concentration must be zero while seated on or riding the motorcycle.

Demerit threshold

The learning rider must have fewer than eight demerit points (suspension risk at eight or more).

Class 5-GDL Learning Rider Restrictions

If the learning rider holds a Class 5-GDL probationary licence while learning motorcycles, the Rider's Guide requires:

• Zero alcohol/drug concentration while seated on or riding the motorcycle
• Cannot supervise a learning rider
• Fewer than eight demerit points

Passengers During Learning

Because one legal supervision mode is supervisor seated on the learner's motorcycle, a blanket rule that "no passengers are allowed under any circumstances" is false. What is true:

• A random friend or unlicensed passenger is not a substitute for a qualified supervisor.
• If the supervisor is following on another motorcycle or in a vehicle, the learner should not carry an additional passenger who is not fulfilling the supervisor role.
• After you hold Class 6 / 6-GDL and are no longer a learning rider, passenger rules shift to equipment and safe-handling requirements covered later in this guide.

Practice under these rules until the road test. Violating supervision or GDL conditions can lead to charges, demerits, and suspensions that delay Class 6 progress.

Practising Under Supervision

The Rider's Guide recommends learning balance, clutch, throttle, and brake coordination before mixing with dense traffic. Supervised practice should include:

• Slow-speed straight-line balance and controlled stops
• Smooth friction-zone starts without stalling into intersections
• Left and right turns with proper shoulder checks and signals
• Lane-position changes while the supervisor models a safe following distance
• Night-avoidance planning so Class 7 learners never approach the sunset/sunrise window without a ride plan home

If the supervisor is following in a car, agree beforehand on pull-over points, hand signals for "slow," "stop," and "hazard," and a maximum practice route length. If the supervisor is on a second motorcycle, keep staggered positions rather than riding side-by-side in one lane—side-by-side riding is illegal and removes escape space.

Why These Restrictions Exist

Motorcycles are smaller, less stable, and easier for other drivers to miss than cars. Night-time glare, animal activity, and reduced contrast make hazard detection harder for new riders. Zero alcohol/drug rules protect the cognitive margin learners need for clutch timing and emergency braking. The eight-demerit GDL threshold exists because probationary riders are removed from the road earlier than fully licensed drivers when risky behaviour accumulates.

Common Knowledge-Test Traps

• Treating motorcycle learning age as 14 because that is the moped minimum age
• Claiming a Class 6-GDL friend can supervise because they "already ride"
• Memorizing only midnight–5:00 a.m. without the sunset/sunrise modifiers for Class 7 learners
• Believing Bluetooth coaching replaces one of the three physical supervision modes

If a practice session would violate night, alcohol, demerit, or supervision rules, cancel the ride. Illegal practice can add demerits that push a Class 7 or Class 5-GDL learner toward the eight-point suspension threshold before the road test is even booked.
