About the THPT History Exam
The History paper of Vietnam's National High School Graduation Examination is, from 2025, an elective subject taken under the 2018 General Education Program (Decision 4068/QD-BGDDT). The graduation exam was cut from six to four subjects, with Literature and Mathematics compulsory and two electives chosen by the candidate. Under Decision 764/QD-BGDDT the History paper lasts 50 minutes and contains 28 items: Part I has 24 single-best-answer multiple-choice questions (each 0.25 points), and Part II has 4 true/false cluster questions of four statements each, scored on a graduated scale up to 1 point. Content is drawn mainly from Grade 12, focusing on the post-war world, the United Nations and ASEAN, the Vietnamese revolution and resistance wars, Doi moi, foreign relations and Ho Chi Minh, with integrated questions from Grades 10-11. The exam stresses historical competencies such as working with sources, explaining and evaluating events, rather than rote memorisation.
