About the THPT Chinese Exam
Tiếng Trung (Chinese) is one of the seven foreign languages a Vietnamese student may choose for the THPT graduation exam, alongside English, Russian, French, German, Japanese and Korean. From the 2025 session, under the 2018 General Education Program (Decisions 4068 and 764/QĐ-BGDĐT), the exam was cut to four subjects — compulsory Mathematics and Literature plus two electives — and the foreign language became an ELECTIVE rather than a compulsory subject. The Chinese paper is a 50-minute paper-based test of 40 four-option multiple-choice questions, with no essay, True/False or short-answer parts. Following a competency-oriented design, it tests phonetics and pinyin, vocabulary and grammar, communicative function, cloze passages, sentence rewriting and ordering, and reading comprehension at roughly HSK 4-5, mostly on grade 10-11 content. Scores are reported on a 10-point scale and combined with the three-year GPA to decide graduation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are on the THPT Chinese exam and how long is it?
The Chinese (Tiếng Trung) paper has 40 four-option multiple-choice questions to be completed in 50 minutes on paper. The foreign-language papers use only this multiple-choice format — there is no essay, True/False or short-answer section.
Is Chinese compulsory in the THPT graduation exam?
No. From the 2025 session, under the 2018 General Education Program, the exam has four subjects: compulsory Mathematics and Literature plus two electives. Foreign Language — including Chinese — is now one of the elective options, no longer compulsory.
What other foreign languages can a student choose instead of Chinese?
MOET offers seven foreign languages for the THPT exam: English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese and Korean. A student selects one of these (or another elective) as part of the two-subject elective block.
How is the Chinese exam scored and what counts as passing?
Each subject is reported on a 10-point scale. There is no fixed per-subject pass mark; graduation is decided by the điểm xét tốt nghiệp formula (50% exam scores plus 50% three-year GPA) recognised at 5.0 or above, provided no subject scores at or below the 1.0 điểm liệt threshold.
What level of Chinese does the exam test?
The paper is built mostly on grade 10-11 vocabulary and grammar and is widely described as close to HSK 4-5. Questions cover phonetics/pinyin, vocabulary and grammar, communicative function, cloze passages, sentence rewriting/ordering and reading comprehension.
Is there a fee to sit the THPT Chinese exam?
The exam is state-funded and free for enrolled grade-12 students. Free candidates (thí sinh tự do) pay only a small registration fee set by their provincial Department of Education and Training; there is no separate per-subject exam fee.
Where can I find an official sample paper?
MOET publishes a competency-based reference paper (đề minh họa / đề tham khảo) with an answer key for each subject, including Chinese, several months before the June exam so students and teachers can prepare.
