The THPT English paper has 40 multiple-choice questions answered in 50 minutes, each worth 0.25 points for a maximum of 10 (MOET).

From the 2025 session, English is an elective rather than a compulsory subject under Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT and Decision 4068/QD-BGDDT.

Candidates take two compulsory subjects, Mathematics and Literature, plus two electives chosen from the remaining subjects, which may include English.

The 2025 redesign cut the paper from 50 questions and 60 minutes to 40 questions and 50 minutes (Ministry of Education and Training).

The cognitive matrix is 22.5% recognition (9 questions), 37.5% comprehension (15 questions) and 40% application (16 questions).

Reading comprehension dominates the paper, with two passages of 8 and 10 questions making up 18 of the 40 items.

Phonetics, word stress, standalone grammar and isolated communication questions were removed from the new GDPT 2018 format.

The exam is organised nationwide by MOET through provincial Departments of Education and Training, normally in late June, with no fee for state-school students.

About the THPT English Exam

The English paper of Vietnam's National High School Graduation Examination (Ky thi tot nghiep THPT) was redesigned for the 2025 session under the 2018 General Education Program and Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT. It is now a 50-minute, fully multiple-choice test of 40 questions, each worth 0.25 points for a maximum of 10. Crucially, from 2025 a foreign language is no longer compulsory: candidates sit two required subjects (Mathematics and Literature) plus two elective subjects of their choice, and English is one of the electives. THPT English: Suggested Study Strategy

1Prioritise reading comprehension: the two passages account for 18 of the 40 official questions, so practise skimming for main ideas and scanning for detail every day.

2Learn grammar in context, not in isolation: passive voice, relative and reduced clauses, conditionals and inversion now appear inside gap-fill notices, leaflets and passages rather than as standalone questions.

3Build CEFR B1-B2 vocabulary by topic (environment, technology, education, urbanisation, culture, health), since around 30% of exam vocabulary sits at this level.

4Master cohesion for ordering tasks: track linking words (Firstly, However, As a result), reference words (this, they, such) and salutation/closing conventions in letters.

5Drill collocations, phrasal verbs and dependent prepositions (capable of, contribute to, throw away), which dominate the notice and leaflet gap-fill sections.

6Practise full 40-question papers within 50 minutes to build time management; aim to leave a few minutes to re-check the longer 10-question reading passage.

7Remember English is now an elective: only choose it if it is one of your two strongest extra subjects, and check how your target universities convert the score for admissions.
