Sample THPT English Practice Questions

Try these sample questions to test your THPT English exam readiness. Each question includes a detailed explanation. Start the interactive quiz above for the full 100+ question experience with AI tutoring.

1Read the school notice and choose the best option for the blank: "All students must arrive _____ time for the morning assembly, which starts at exactly 7:00 a.m."
A.in
B.at
C.by
D.on
Explanation: The fixed expression is "on time," meaning punctually, at the scheduled moment. This collocation is one of the basic grammar points the THPT English paper tests inside short notices and announcements.
2Library notice: "Books _____ on loan must be returned within fourteen days." Choose the best option for the blank.
A.taken
B.who are taken
C.taking
D.which taking
Explanation: This is a reduced relative clause: "Books which are taken on loan" shortens to "Books taken on loan" because the books receive the action (passive meaning). Reduced relative clauses appear frequently in the notice and leaflet gap-fill sections of the THPT English exam.
3Choose the best option to complete this announcement: "Visitors are kindly requested to keep their voices _____ inside the reading room."
A.lowly
B.low
C.lower
D.lowered
Explanation: After "keep + object," an adjective describes the resulting state: "keep their voices low." "Low" is the correct adjective form, while the comparative is not needed without a comparison.
4Notice at a swimming pool: "For safety reasons, children under twelve must be _____ by an adult at all times." Choose the best word.
A.accompanying
B.accompany
C.accompanied
D.accompaniment
Explanation: After "must be," a past participle forms the passive voice: "must be accompanied by an adult." The children receive the action of being accompanied, so the passive participle is required.
5Choose the best option: "The museum offers free _____ to students who present a valid school card."
A.admit
B.admitting
C.admissible
D.admission
Explanation: A noun is needed after the adjective "free" and as the object "offers free _____." "Admission" is the noun meaning permission or the right to enter. Word-form selection inside notices is a standard THPT item.
6Bus station sign: "Passengers are advised _____ their luggage unattended at any time." Choose the best option.
A.not to leave
B.not leaving
C.to not leaving
D.don't leave
Explanation: The pattern "advise somebody (not) to do something" uses a to-infinitive, and the negative is formed with "not" before "to": "advised not to leave." This verb pattern is commonly tested in the announcement gap-fill part.
7Choose the best option for the canteen notice: "_____ the recent price increase, all meals will remain affordable for students."
A.Because of
B.Despite
C.Due to
D.Thanks to
Explanation: The notice contrasts a price increase with meals staying affordable, so a contrast connector is needed. "Despite" introduces a noun phrase and signals contrast, fitting the surprising result. Linking words in context are a key reading skill in the new format.
8Park notice: "Visitors must not _____ litter on the grass; please use the bins provided." Choose the best phrasal verb.
A.drop off
B.give up
C.throw away
D.take in
Explanation: "Throw away" means to dispose of or discard something, which matches getting rid of litter. The second clause about using bins confirms that disposing of rubbish is the intended meaning.
9Choose the best option: "The school festival, _____ takes place every May, attracts hundreds of visitors."
A.who
B.where
C.what
D.which
Explanation: The relative pronoun refers to "the school festival" (a thing) and acts as the subject of "takes place," so "which" is correct. The commas mark a non-defining relative clause adding extra information.
10Office notice: "Staff should _____ the air conditioner before leaving the room to save energy." Choose the best phrasal verb.
A.turn off
B.turn up
C.turn into
D.turn down
Explanation: "Turn off" means to stop a machine or appliance from operating, which fits saving energy when leaving. The purpose clause "to save energy" confirms the device should be switched off.

About the THPT English Exam

The English paper of Vietnam's National High School Graduation Examination (Ky thi tot nghiep THPT) was redesigned for the 2025 session under the 2018 General Education Program and Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT. It is now a 50-minute, fully multiple-choice test of 40 questions, each worth 0.25 points for a maximum of 10. Crucially, from 2025 a foreign language is no longer compulsory: candidates sit two required subjects (Mathematics and Literature) plus two elective subjects of their choice, and English is one of the electives. The new paper drops phonetics, stress and isolated grammar items and instead focuses on reading comprehension and contextual language use, with the cognitive mix set at 22.5% recognition, 37.5% comprehension and 40% application. This 100-question practice bank mirrors the official section types - notice and leaflet gap-fill, sentence and paragraph ordering, longer-information gap-fill, and two reading-comprehension passages - so learners can prepare across the full range of skills.

THPT English Study Tips from Top Performers

1Prioritise reading comprehension: the two passages account for 18 of the 40 official questions, so practise skimming for main ideas and scanning for detail every day.
2Learn grammar in context, not in isolation: passive voice, relative and reduced clauses, conditionals and inversion now appear inside gap-fill notices, leaflets and passages rather than as standalone questions.
3Build CEFR B1-B2 vocabulary by topic (environment, technology, education, urbanisation, culture, health), since around 30% of exam vocabulary sits at this level.
4Master cohesion for ordering tasks: track linking words (Firstly, However, As a result), reference words (this, they, such) and salutation/closing conventions in letters.
5Drill collocations, phrasal verbs and dependent prepositions (capable of, contribute to, throw away), which dominate the notice and leaflet gap-fill sections.
6Practise full 40-question papers within 50 minutes to build time management; aim to leave a few minutes to re-check the longer 10-question reading passage.
7Remember English is now an elective: only choose it if it is one of your two strongest extra subjects, and check how your target universities convert the score for admissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the THPT English exam and how long is it?

The official paper has 40 multiple-choice questions and lasts 50 minutes. Each question is worth 0.25 points, so the maximum total score is 10. This practice bank provides 100 questions for extra preparation across the same section types.

Is English still a compulsory subject in the THPT exam?

No. From the 2025 session, under Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, candidates take two compulsory subjects (Mathematics and Literature) plus two electives of their choice. English is now one of the elective subjects rather than a required one.

What changed in the English paper for 2025 and 2026?

The paper was cut from 50 questions and 60 minutes to 40 questions and 50 minutes. Phonetics, word stress and isolated grammar and communication items were removed, and the focus shifted to reading comprehension, gap-fill in notices and leaflets, and sentence ordering.

What types of questions appear on the new format?

There are five main task types: gap-fill in notices/announcements, gap-fill in leaflets/flyers, ordering of dialogues, letters and paragraphs, gap-fill of longer information, and two reading-comprehension passages with 8 and 10 questions respectively.

How is the THPT graduation result calculated?

From 2025 the graduation result is based 50% on the candidate's grade-12 academic record and 50% on the average of the examination subjects. A score is given out of 10 for each subject, and a very low score (generally below 1.0) can cause a candidate to fail.

Who organises the THPT exam and when is it held?

It is organised by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) through provincial Departments of Education and Training and is held nationwide, normally in late June. There is no exam fee for grade-12 students at state schools.
