1Under Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510, when does a Category B car towing a trailer over 750 kg PTAC need a Category BE licence?
A.Only if the trailer carries goods or animals for payment
B.Only if the trailer's PTAC exceeds 1,500 kg, whatever the car
C.If the PTRA tops 3,500 kg or the trailer's PTAC tops the car's PV
D.Whenever the trailer has two axles, whatever its PTAC
Explanation: Art. 3 lets Category B tow a trailer of up to 750 kg PTAC, or a heavier trailer only if the combination's PTRA does not exceed 3,500 kg and the trailer's PTAC does not exceed the towing car's unladen weight (PV). Category BE covers a B car with a trailer over 750 kg when the PTRA exceeds 3,500 kg or the trailer's PTAC exceeds the car's PV.
2What does PTAC (poids total autorisé en charge) mean on a vehicle's registration document?
A.The maximum authorised weight of the vehicle when laden
B.The weight of the empty vehicle ready for the road
C.The maximum authorised weight of car and trailer together
D.The maximum vertical load allowed on the tow ball
Explanation: The PTAC is the most a single vehicle or trailer may weigh when laden: its unladen weight plus the maximum load it is authorised to carry, occupants and goods included.
3What does PV (poids à vide) designate on a vehicle's registration certificate?
A.The maximum payload that the vehicle may legally carry
B.The maximum weight of the vehicle when fully laden
C.The maximum weight that the vehicle may legally tow
D.The empty vehicle's weight, without load or occupants
Explanation: PV is the unladen weight of the vehicle in running order, without driver, passengers or load. It matters for BE: a trailer whose PTAC exceeds the towing car's PV needs BE even when the PTRA is 3,500 kg or less (Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510, Art. 3).
4What does the PTRA (poids total roulant autorisé) of a towing vehicle mean?
A.The maximum authorised weight of the trailer on its own
B.The maximum authorised weight of the whole combination
C.The maximum load allowed on the towing car's rear axle
D.The maximum speed allowed when towing a trailer
Explanation: The PTRA is the maximum authorised total weight of the towing vehicle and its trailer together. Décret n° 2000-147 (Art. 3) forbids putting a combination on the road when its real total weight exceeds the towing vehicle's PTRA.
5For how long is a Category BE licence valid when the holder is under 60?
A.3 years
B.10 years
C.5 years
D.For life, without renewal
Explanation: Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510 (Art. 20) sets the validity of categories AA, A, B, BE and H at 10 years up to age 60, 5 years from 60 to 76 and 3 years after 76. Categories C, CE, D, DE and G are valid for 3, 2 and 1 years over the same age bands.
6What is the minimum age for a Category BE licence in Tunisia?
A.25 years
B.18 years
C.21 years
D.20 years
Explanation: Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510 (Art. 11) sets the minimum age at 16 for AA; 18 for A, B and H; 20 for C, G and BE; and 21 for D, CE and DE.
7What must a candidate already have before applying for Category BE?
A.Category B, with the 2-year stage period completed
B.Category C, held for at least six months beforehand
C.Category A, held first, as for every heavier category
D.Nothing, if trained at a driving school
Explanation: Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510 (Art. 7) requires candidates for C, D, G or BE to hold Category B and to have completed the stage period of Code de la route Art. 82, which lasts two years from obtaining the licence. The ATTT summarises this as B held for at least two years.
8A car (PTAC 2,200 kg, PV 1,500 kg) tows a trailer with a PTAC of 1,600 kg. Which licence is needed?
A.C: the total weight exceeds 3,500 kg
B.B: the car alone is under 3,500 kg
C.BE: the combination exceeds 3,500 kg
D.B, provided you stay under 80 km/h
Explanation: The trailer exceeds 750 kg and the combination's authorised weight is 2,200 + 1,600 = 3,800 kg, above 3,500 kg; the trailer's 1,600 kg PTAC also exceeds the car's 1,500 kg PV. Either condition alone requires BE (Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510, Art. 3).
9A car (PTAC 1,800 kg, PV 1,300 kg) tows a trailer with a PTAC of 1,000 kg. Which licence is needed?
A.C, because the trailer has its own brakes
B.BE, because the trailer exceeds 750 kg
C.BE, because the total exceeds 2,500 kg
D.B is enough, as both B conditions are met
Explanation: Category B may tow a trailer over 750 kg when the combination stays at or below 3,500 kg (here 2,800 kg) and the trailer's PTAC does not exceed the car's PV (1,000 kg against 1,300 kg). Both conditions are met, so B is sufficient (Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510, Art. 3).
10A car with a PTAC of 3,000 kg tows a trailer with a PTAC of 700 kg. Which licence is needed?
A.BE, as the combined total exceeds 3,500 kg
B.B, as the trailer is 750 kg or less
C.BE, as the trailer exceeds half the PV
D.C, as the total exceeds 3,500 kg
Explanation: Under Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510 (Art. 3), a Category B car may always tow a trailer whose PTAC does not exceed 750 kg; the 3,500 kg and PV conditions apply only to heavier trailers.

About the Tunisia Category BE Exam

Category BE covers a Category B car towing a trailer over 750 kg PTAC when the combination's PTRA exceeds 3,500 kg or the trailer's PTAC exceeds the car's unladen weight. Candidates must be 20 and hold Category B with the 2-year stage period completed, and they take ATTT road and manoeuvres tests at one appointment. This bank is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation of the knowledge behind those practical tests — weight rules, coupling, loading, stability and reversing — not a simulation of the ATTT assessment.

Exam sponsor: Agence Technique des Transports Terrestres (ATTT) — Ministère du Transport. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

Road (circulation) and manoeuvres tests with a car and trailer at one appointment (Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510, Art. 28). Annexe 1 lists the BE checks (load safety, coupling and its brake and electrical connections) and manoeuvres: coupling and uncoupling the trailer, reversing along a curve, and parking safely to load or unload. A candidate who fails either practical test retakes both (Art. 30).

Time Limit

Not published for BE (road tests average about 30 minutes)

Passing Score

Examiner assessment (no numeric pass mark published)

Exam / Certification Fees

25 TND per test registration plus a 25 TND licence fee at the first registration; driving-school fees are separate

Tunisia Category BE: Suggested Study Strategy

1Work through the B/BE test with real figures: trailer over 750 kg, then check the 3,500 kg PTRA and the car's unladen weight.
2Rehearse the coupling sequence aloud: trailer braked, lock the head, lift test, breakaway cable, electrics and lights, jockey wheel up, handbrake off.
3Load heavy items low and over the axle and keep nose weight positive within the tow bar's limit.
4Remember the speeds: a combination over 3,500 kg PTRA is limited to 80 km/h on the open road and 100 km/h on motorways.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need Category BE instead of Category B?

When a B car tows a trailer over 750 kg PTAC and either the combination's PTRA exceeds 3,500 kg or the trailer's PTAC exceeds the car's unladen weight (Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510, Art. 3).

Is there a BE theory test?

The ATTT's theory-test table gives no BE question count, and BE candidates already hold Category B. The published BE assessment is the road and manoeuvres tests at one appointment.

Which manoeuvres are assessed for BE?

Annexe 1 (6.3) lists coupling and uncoupling the trailer, reversing along a curve, and parking safely to load or unload.

Does this bank replace practical training?

No. It is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation; the ATTT assesses BE by practical tests in a real car and trailer.
