1Which hand operates the front wheel brake lever on a standard motorcycle?
A.The left hand
B.Either hand interchangeably
C.The right hand
D.The front brake is operated by the left foot
Explanation: On all standard production motorcycles, the front brake lever is operated by the right hand on the handlebar, while the clutch lever is operated by the left hand.
2Which foot operates the rear wheel brake pedal on a standard motorcycle?
A.The left foot
B.Both feet simultaneously
C.The rear brake is operated only by the left hand
D.The right foot
Explanation: The rear wheel brake pedal is located on the right side of the motorcycle and is depressed using the right foot. The left foot controls the gear selector pedal.
3What is the primary function of the engine cut-off kill switch located on the right handlebar?
A.To stop the engine at once without letting go of the bars
B.To lock the steering against theft
C.To flash the headlights at oncoming traffic
D.To operate the starter motor
Explanation: The emergency stop (kill) switch on the right handlebar cuts the engine instantly while both hands stay on the grips, for example if the throttle sticks or after a fall. The official Category A programme lists the emergency stop switch among the safety items candidates must know and check (Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510, Annexe 1, points 3.1.4 and 5.1.2).
4Under Tunisian technical rules, what minimum depth must the main tread grooves of a motorcycle tyre keep?
A.0.5 mm
B.1 mm
C.1.6 mm
D.2.5 mm
Explanation: Décret n° 2000-147 (Art. 16–17) applies the same rule to all motor vehicles and their trailers: when the main grooves are measured at four points around the tyre, no more than one point may be below 1 mm. A worn tyre also grips far less on wet roads, which matters even more on two wheels.
5How should motorcycle tire pressures normally be checked?
A.Right after a fast ride, when the tyres are hot
B.When cold, with an accurate gauge
C.By pressing the tyre with a thumb
D.Only at the visite technique
Explanation: Tire pressure must be checked when tires are cold (before riding or after traveling less than 2 km). Riding heats the air inside the tire, increasing pressure and giving falsely elevated readings.
6What is the standard gearshift sequence on a manual 5- or 6-speed motorcycle from bottom to top?
A.Neutral at the bottom, then all gears up
B.All gears down, neutral at the top
C.1st down, neutral, then 2nd to 6th up
D.Reverse, then 1st to 5th up
Explanation: Standard motorcycle sequential transmissions use the '1 down, neutral half-click up, remaining gears up' pattern: pressing down from neutral engages 1st gear; lifting up shifts through 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th.
7What is the correct method for checking the drive chain slack (flèche de la chaîne) on a motorcycle?
A.Tighten it until there is no play at all
B.Check that the chain sags at least 10 cm below the swingarm
C.Pull it sideways away from the rear sprocket
D.Measure up-down play mid-way along the lower run, per the manual
Explanation: Chain slack is checked by moving the lower run up and down midway between the sprockets and comparing the movement with the manufacturer's range. A chain that is too tight strains bearings and can snap; one that is too slack can jump the sprockets. Checking the chain is part of the official Category A pre-ride checks (Décret gouvernemental n° 2021-510, Annexe 1, point 5.1.2).
8What handling symptom indicates that a motorcycle's front tire is significantly under-inflated?
A.The bike pulls steadily to one side
B.Engine revs rise without the bike speeding up
C.The brake lever comes back to the grip
D.Heavy, sluggish steering into corners
Explanation: An under-inflated front tire creates a wide contact patch that resists turning, making steering heavy, sluggish, and unpredictable, and causing the bike to 'wander' in corners.
9How should the rear-view mirrors of a motorcycle be adjusted before setting off?
A.Aimed at the road just behind the rear wheel
B.Seated in riding position, showing a wide view behind
C.Aimed mostly at your own shoulders
D.Set while standing beside the bike on its side stand
Explanation: Mirrors must be adjusted while seated on the motorcycle in the active riding posture. They should show the outer edge of the rider's shoulders or elbows for reference, maximizing the view of the roadway behind and adjacent lanes.
10What is the danger of oil contamination on motorcycle brake discs or pads?
A.It causes the brake pads to wear out faster
B.The brakes grab more sharply than normal
C.Friction collapses and braking power is lost
D.It switches on the ABS warning light
Explanation: Oil, chain lube, or fork fluid on brake discs or friction pads lubricates the contact surfaces, destroying friction and causing immediate loss of stopping power. Contaminated brake pads must be replaced.

About the Tunisia Category A Exam

The Tunisian Category A licence covers motorcycles and also entitles the holder to Category AA vehicles. Candidates aged 18 or over take three ATTT tests: a theory test of 30 photo questions in Arabic or French, a road test, and four closed-course manoeuvres at the same appointment; the examiner hands over an exam report and, on success, a provisional licence. This bank is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation covering the rules, checks and riding knowledge behind those tests, not an official translation or a substitute for practical training.

Exam sponsor: Agence Technique des Transports Terrestres (ATTT) — Ministère du Transport. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

Three tests: a computer-based theory test (Arabic or French, about 30 minutes), then a road test (about 30 minutes on average) and a manoeuvres test at the same appointment. The four manoeuvres, in order, are a slalom, riding forward in a narrow corridor, an imaginary figure of eight, and riding at about 40 km/h in second gear followed by an emergency stop. Failing either practical test means retaking both.

Time Limit

About 30 minutes (theory); road test about 30 minutes

Passing Score

Theory: AA pass (20 / 25) + 4 / 5 Category A questions

Exam / Certification Fees

25 TND per theory or practical registration, plus a 25 TND licence fee at the first theory registration; driving-school fees are separate

Tunisia Category A: Suggested Study Strategy

1Learn the four manoeuvres in their official order and what each one checks: balance, slow control, gear use and emergency braking.
2Practise the pre-ride check from Annexe 1: tyres, brakes, steering, emergency stop switch, chain, oil, lights, reflectors, indicators and horn.
3Watch for slippery surfaces named in the programme: manhole covers, painted lines and arrows, and rails.
4Remember that Category A also covers AA vehicles, and that a theory pass lasts 15 months and up to six practical tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Category A theory test marked?

It has 30 questions: candidates must pass the Category AA part (20 of 25) and get at least 4 of the 5 Category A questions right.

Which manoeuvres are tested for Category A?

Four, in order: a slalom, riding forward in a narrow corridor, an imaginary figure of eight, and riding at about 40 km/h in second gear followed by an emergency stop.

Are the road and manoeuvres tests on the same day?

Yes. For Category A both practical tests take place at the same appointment, and a candidate who fails either must retake both.

Can I take the tests in English?

No official English version is published: the theory test is in Arabic or French. This bank is an English-language study adaptation, not an official translation.
