1Under Article 9.1.4 of D.S. N° 007-2016-MTC, what does a Clase A Categoría III-a licence authorise?
A.N3 goods vehicles over 12 t, which may also tow trailers and semi-trailers of category O
B.Only M2 vehicles of up to 5 t gross weight used in tourist service
C.M3 buses and N3 trucks without distinction, plus all lower categories
D.M3 vehicles over 6 t in passenger service, plus Categorías I, II-a and II-b vehicles
Explanation: Categoría III-a covers M3 vehicles of more than 6 t gross vehicle weight used for passenger transport, such as urban and interprovincial buses, and also the vehicles of Categorías I, II-a and II-b. It does not cover N3 trucks.
2What prior licence and seniority does Article 14.3 of D.S. N° 007-2016-MTC require for recategorisation to Clase A Categoría III-a?
A.A-IIa for at least one year
B.A-I for at least five years
C.A-IIb for at least two years
D.A-IIIb for at least one year
Explanation: Article 14.3(b) requires a Clase A Categoría II-b licence held for at least two years, plus a clean record of fines and sanctions, the health certificate, the COFIPRO constancia and both exams. A-IIIb is a parallel category, not a step towards III-a.
3What did D.S. N° 003-2026-MTC, approved in January 2026, create for applicants to Clase A Categorías III-a, III-b and III-c?
A.A two-year regime of free company training programmes that can replace the prior-experience requirement
B.A new online exam, taken from home, that replaces the MTC knowledge exam for the three heavy categories
C.An exemption from the health certificate for applicants under 30 years old
D.A rule letting A-I holders drive buses for one year without recategorising
Explanation: D.S. N° 003-2026-MTC created a two-year Régimen Temporal Excepcional: registered transport companies may run free Programas de Entrenamiento en la Conducción (150 to 180 hours of supervised driving practice) for applicants to III-a, III-b and III-c, as an alternative to the traditional prior-driving-experience requirement. Applicants must still meet the other conditions to obtain the licence.
4An A-IIIa driver is offered work driving an N3 tractor unit. What does the licence allow?
A.It covers the tractor, because buses and tractors are both heavy vehicles
B.It covers the tractor only on national roads
C.It covers the tractor if the semi-trailer is empty
D.It does not cover N3 vehicles; Categoría III-b or III-c is needed
Explanation: III-a is limited to M3 passenger vehicles over 6 t plus the lower categories. N3 goods vehicles, with or without O-category units, need III-b, and III-c covers both heavy buses and heavy trucks.
5Which specific subjects does Directiva N° 004-2016-MTC/15 list for the Clase A Categoría III-a exam besides the RNAT and the RNV?
A.Advanced mechanics: bus driving electronics, evacuation equipment and GPS monitoring
B.Motorcycle helmets, riding position and two-wheeler circulation rules
C.Hazardous goods under D.S. N° 021-2008-MTC: classes, labels and packaging
D.Coupling and uncoupling semi-trailers, and the air and electrical systems of trucks and tractors
Explanation: Section 8.2.4.3 of the Directiva lists 'mecánica avanzada' for III-a: electronic controls that help drive buses (speed, stops, travel time, wireless communication, alerts), alternative evacuation and emergency equipment (automatic fire systems, emergency hammers) and vehicle-position monitoring.
6An A-IIIa holder wants Categoría III-c. Which seniority rule in Article 14.5 lets them apply?
A.A-IIIa held for at least one year
B.A-IIIa held for at least three years
C.A-IIa held for at least four years
D.No prior professional licence is needed
Explanation: Article 14.5(b) allows recategorisation to III-c with a III-a or III-b licence held for at least one year, or with a II-b licence held for at least four years.
7Which statement about the A-IIIa knowledge exam is correct?
A.40 general questions only, with no category-specific questions at all on the test
B.An oral exam conducted by a SUTRAN inspector at a checkpoint
C.20 questions in total; 18 correct needed in 30 minutes
D.20 general + 20 specific questions; 35 correct needed in 40 minutes
Explanation: Directiva N° 004-2016-MTC/15 applies the same structure to all professional categories: 40 questions drawn at random from the category's balotario, 20 general and 20 specific, in 40 minutes, with 35 correct answers needed to pass. The exam is taken on a computer after fingerprint identification.
8Under Article 20.1 of the RNAT, which vehicle category and class must a bus in national regular passenger service belong to?
A.M2 Clase II
B.M3 Clase I
C.M3 Clase III
D.N3 converted for passengers
Explanation: Article 20.1.1 requires M3 Clase III vehicles, built exclusively for seated passengers, for national regular service. M2 vehicles are allowed only by exception on routes between neighbouring regions where geography rules out M3 Clase III buses.
9What minimum net weight and power-to-weight ratio does Article 20.1 of the RNAT set for buses in national regular service?
A.5.7 t net weight and 6.5 HP/t
B.8.5 t net weight and 12.2 HP/t
C.12 t net weight and 10 HP/t
D.6 t net weight and 8 HP/t
Explanation: Article 20.1.2 requires a minimum net vehicle weight of 8.5 t, and Article 20.1.3 a power-to-weight ratio of at least 12.2 HP per tonne. The RNV's general minimum for heavy vehicles is lower, at 6.5 HP/t.
10When must a bus in national regular service have ABS brakes on all wheels under Article 20.1.4 of the RNAT?
A.When its gross vehicle weight is 18 t or more
B.Only when it has more than 40 passenger seats installed
C.Only when it was made after 2020
D.Never; ABS is optional for buses
Explanation: Article 20.1.4 requires a braking system suited to the vehicle's type, size and weight, and specifically ABS on all wheels for vehicles of 18 t gross vehicle weight or more. ABS prevents wheel lock-up, so the driver keeps steering control while braking hard.

MTC Brevete A-IIIa: Suggested Study Strategy

1Study RNAT Article 20 point by point; most bus-specific questions come from it.
2Do not confuse the speed limiter (110 km/h plus an alert above the legal limit) with the 90 km/h carretera limit for passenger buses.
3Memorise the bus dimensions: B2 13.20 m and 18 t, B3-1 14.00 m (conventional) and 23 t, BA-1 articulated 18.30 m.
4Learn the electronic manifiesto de usuarios and hoja de ruta rules, including details for minors travelling alone.
5Review the advanced mechanics topics: monitoring devices, event recorders, retarders and emergency equipment.
6Practise the general subjects with the Class A-I bank, since half of the exam comes from them.
