1Under Article 9 of D.S. N° 007-2016-MTC, which vehicles may the holder of a Clase A Categoría II-a licence drive?
A.M2 and M3 passenger vehicles up to 6 t gross weight in any passenger service
B.M1 vehicles in special passenger services such as taxi or tourist transport, plus A-I vehicles
C.N3 goods vehicles, with or without trailers or semi-trailers of category O
D.L5 three-wheelers used in the special public passenger service in vehículos menores (mototaxis)
Explanation: Article 9.1.2 of the licensing regulation gives Categoría II-a the M1 vehicles used in special passenger services: taxi, tourist transport, cross-border international passenger transport and emergency vehicles, among others set by the RNAT. The same licence also covers everything a Categoría I licence allows (private M1 and M2 vehicles and N1 goods vehicles).
2What prior licence does Article 14.1 of D.S. N° 007-2016-MTC require for recategorisation to Clase A Categoría II-a?
A.A Clase A Categoría I licence held for at least one year
B.A Clase A Categoría I licence held for at least three years
C.A Clase A Categoría I licence held for at least two years
D.A Clase B Categoría II-c licence held for at least two years
Explanation: Article 14.1(b) requires a Clase A Categoría I licence with seniority of at least two years. The other requirements include no unpaid fines or pending sanctions, a health certificate and the COFIPRO constancia, both registered in the Sistema Nacional de Conductores, and passing the knowledge and skills exams.
3Since D.S. N° 026-2016-MTC rewrote Article 14 in January 2017, which of these is no longer a requirement for recategorisation to Clase A Categoría II-a?
A.A COFIPRO constancia registered in the Sistema Nacional de Conductores
B.A health certificate for driving licences registered in the same system
C.Having no unpaid fines or pending sanctions under Annex I of the RNT
D.Proof of having completed secondary education
Explanation: The original 2016 text of Article 14 asked for completed secondary education. The version in force since 4 January 2017 dropped that requirement and keeps the prior licence and seniority, the clean sanctions record, the health certificate, the COFIPRO constancia and the two exams. Older balotario items that still mention education levels are out of date.
4What does the COFIPRO constancia required for a professional Class A licence certify?
A.That the applicant finished the Programa de Formación de Conductores at a driving school
B.That the applicant passed the medical and psychological evaluation at an ECSAL
C.That the applicant has no points or pending sanctions recorded in the Registro Nacional de Sanciones
D.That the applicant passed the Taller Cambiemos de Actitud
Explanation: COFIPRO stands for the Constancia de Finalización del Programa de Formación de Conductores. A driving school (Escuela de Conductores) issues it and registers it in the Sistema Nacional de Conductores, and Article 14 lists it for every professional Class A category.
5How long is a Clase A Categoría II-a licence valid when it is first obtained, under Article 18-A of D.S. N° 007-2016-MTC as amended in 2021?
A.Three years
B.Five years
C.Eight years
D.Ten years
Explanation: Article 18-A.2 (text of D.S. N° 014-2021-MTC) gives Clase A Categorías II-a, II-b, III-a, III-b and III-c a validity of five years from issue. The MTC balotario still shows three years because it quotes the old Article 18, which was repealed in 2019.
6An A-IIa driver whose only firm sanctions since the last revalidation were for leve infractions (all complied with) applies to revalidate. What validity does Article 18-A.2 give the new licence?
A.Two years
B.Three years
C.Five years
D.Four years
Explanation: Under Article 18-A.2, the revalidated professional licence lasts five years if the driver was not sanctioned, four years if sanctioned only for leve infractions, and three years if sanctioned for a grave or muy grave infraction, provided the sanction was complied with and is firm.
7What is the maximum age for holding a professional driving licence and driving service vehicles in Peru today?
A.65 years
B.70 years
C.75 years
D.80 years
Explanation: Article 20.1 of D.S. N° 007-2016-MTC sets 80 years as the maximum age for holding a professional licence, and states that this changes the maximum age in the RNAT; Article 29.2 of the RNAT also reads 80 years since D.S. N° 026-2016-MTC. The MTC balotario still gives 70 years, which is the repealed 2015 figure.
8A professional Class A licence is issued or revalidated for a driver aged 72. How long is it valid under Article 20.1 of D.S. N° 007-2016-MTC?
A.Three years
B.Two years
C.One year
D.Six months
Explanation: From age 70 the professional licence is granted for shorter periods after a favourable medical and psychological evaluation: one year from 70 to 76, and six months from 76 to 81, always within the 80-year maximum.
9How is the MTC knowledge exam for Clase A Categoría II-a structured under Directiva N° 004-2016-MTC/15?
A.40 questions (20 general, 20 category-specific); 35 correct needed in 40 minutes
B.40 general questions only; 35 correct needed in 40 minutes
C.50 questions (25 general and 25 specific); 40 correct answers needed in 60 minutes
D.20 category-specific questions only; 18 correct needed in 30 minutes
Explanation: Directiva N° 004-2016-MTC/15 sets 40 questions drawn at random from the MTC balotario, 40 minutes, and a pass mark of 35 correct. For professional categories such as II-a the questions are split into 20 general and 20 specific ones; A-I and B-IIa/B-IIb candidates get 40 general questions.
10On the 40-question MTC knowledge exam, what is the largest number of questions a candidate can miss or leave blank and still pass?
A.Four
B.Five
C.Six
D.Eight
Explanation: The pass mark is at least 35 correct answers out of 40 (87.5%), so 40 − 35 = 5 questions may be wrong or unanswered. A sixth miss leaves 34 correct, which fails.

The knowledge exam adds 20 questions on the Reglamento Nacional de Administración de Transporte (RNAT): service classifications, authorities, driving hours, driver obligations, habilitación, sanctions and preventive measures. MTC Brevete A-IIa: Suggested Study Strategy

1Learn the RNAT service classifications: regular versus special, and the special modalities (taxi, tourist, workers, students, social, auto colectivo).
2Memorise the Article 30 driving-hour limits: 5 hours day, 4 hours night, and a third driver on trips over 20 hours.
3Know which authority does what: MTC, regional governments, provincial municipalities, ATU in Lima and Callao, and SUTRAN for national-scope inspection.
4Separate incumplimiento (failing a condition of access or permanence) from infracción (an act or omission typified in the tables).
5Watch for outdated balotario answers: the current rules give a 5-year professional validity and an age-80 maximum.
6Practise the general subjects with the Class A-I bank, since half of the exam comes from them.
