1Under Article 162 of Peru's Reglamento Nacional de Tránsito (RNT), as amended by D.S. N° 025-2021-MTC, what is the maximum speed on urban calles and jirones when no sign sets a different limit?
A.40 km/h
B.30 km/h
C.50 km/h
D.60 km/h
Explanation: D.S. N° 025-2021-MTC lowered the default limit on calles and jirones to 30 km/h, and the MTC has applied it since 18 July 2022. The MTC's published 2018 balotario still shows the earlier figure of 40 km/h, so learn the current rule and recognise the old one.
2What is the default maximum speed on an urban avenida in Peru when no sign shows a different limit?
A.60 km/h
B.80 km/h
C.50 km/h
D.40 km/h
Explanation: Article 162 of the RNT, as amended by D.S. N° 025-2021-MTC, sets 50 km/h for avenidas in urban zones. The change replaced the former 60 km/h limit and has been applied since 18 July 2022.
3Under Article 162 of the RNT, what is the maximum speed in an urban zona escolar or zona de hospital?
A.30 km/h
B.40 km/h
C.50 km/h
D.35 km/h
Explanation: Article 162 sets 30 km/h for both school zones and hospital zones in urban areas. D.S. N° 025-2021-MTC also defines a zona escolar as the area within roughly 100 metres of each access to a school.
4On a carretera with no speed sign, what is the maximum speed for automobiles, camionetas and motorcycles?
A.90 km/h
B.80 km/h
C.110 km/h
D.100 km/h
Explanation: Article 162(b) of the RNT sets 100 km/h on carreteras for automóviles, camionetas and motorcycles. Other vehicle types have lower ceilings, such as 90 km/h for public passenger service and 80 km/h for cargo vehicles.
5A vehicle transporting schoolchildren is travelling on a carretera with no speed sign. What maximum speed does Article 162 of the RNT allow it?
A.90 km/h
B.80 km/h
C.70 km/h
D.100 km/h
Explanation: Article 162(b) gives vehicles providing public or private school transport a 70 km/h ceiling on carreteras, the same as vehicles carrying hazardous goods. These are the lowest carretera limits in the article.
6A carretera passes through a town. Under Article 163 of the RNT, as amended by D.S. N° 025-2021-MTC, what is the maximum speed through a commercial zone?
A.35 km/h
B.30 km/h
C.50 km/h
D.55 km/h
Explanation: The amended Article 163 sets 30 km/h in commercial zones, 50 km/h in residential zones and 30 km/h in school or hospital zones where a carretera crosses a populated centre. The road authority must sign these crossings.
7Unless a sign sets a specific minimum, what minimum speed does Article 165 of the RNT require in urban zones and on carreteras?
A.Half of the maximum fixed for that type of road
B.20 km/h on every type of road
C.30 km/h in towns and 60 km/h on carreteras
D.There is no minimum speed in Peru
Explanation: Article 165 sets the minimum in urban zones and on carreteras at half of the maximum fixed for each type of road. Failing to respect the minimum is itself an infraction under code M20(d).
8When fog, heavy rain or dust leaves a stretch of road with poor visibility, what speed limit does Article 167 of the RNT apply?
A.The posted limit minus 10 km/h
B.A flat 30 km/h on every road
C.The normal limit, provided the low beams are on
D.Half of the maximum fixed for that type of road
Explanation: Article 167, as amended by D.S. N° 025-2021-MTC, states that on stretches with poor visibility or adverse weather such as fog, heavy rain, snow, smoke or dust, the limits in Articles 162 to 164 become half of the maximum for that type of road.
9Article 164 of the RNT sets special precautionary limits. What is the maximum speed when crossing an urban intersection that has no traffic lights?
A.50 km/h
B.40 km/h
C.20 km/h
D.30 km/h
Explanation: Article 164(a) sets a precautionary speed of no more than 30 km/h at urban intersections without traffic lights. The same article sets 20 km/h at level crossings with no barrier or signals, and near schools or sports venues while people are entering or leaving.
10Two vehicles reach an unregulated intersection at the same time from different roads. Under the RNT, which one has the right of way?
A.The vehicle on the left of the other one
B.Whichever driver sounds the horn first
C.The vehicle approaching from the other's right
D.The larger or heavier of the two vehicles
Explanation: Article 178 of the RNT gives priority to the vehicle approaching from the right of the other when both arrive simultaneously at an unregulated intersection. This rule does not apply where traffic lights or PARE or CEDA EL PASO signs decide priority (Article 180).

MTC Brevete A-I: Suggested Study Strategy

1Learn the current speed limits: 30 km/h on calles and jirones, 50 km/h on avenidas, 80 km/h on vías expresas, 30 km/h in school and hospital zones, and 100 km/h on carreteras for cars.
2Know the priority rules: vehicles already inside an unregulated intersection go first, simultaneous arrivals give way to the right, and traffic already in a roundabout has priority.
3Memorise the distances in the RNT: signal 20 m before urban turns and 30 m on carreteras, stop 5 m from a railway, park 10 m from crossings and bus stops, and dip lights at 200 m.
4Learn the main infraction codes: M1 and M2 for alcohol, M3 for driving without a licence, M20 for speeding, G18 for phones and G28 for seat belts.
5Use the official MTC balotario and simulacro, but update the speed-limit answers to the 2022 rules.
6Sort signs by shape and colour: red-bordered circles regulate, yellow diamonds warn, orange marks road works, and green or blue rectangles inform.
7Remember Ley N° 30297: children up to 12 ride in the rear seat, and babies under one use a rear-facing child restraint.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on Peru's Class A-I knowledge exam, and what score do I need?

The exam has 40 multiple-choice questions drawn at random from the MTC balotario. You have 40 minutes and must answer at least 35 correctly (87.5%) to pass.

Where do I take the Class A-I knowledge exam in 2026?

Since 22 April 2026, the Municipalidad Metropolitana de Lima runs Class A knowledge and driving exams in Lima Metropolitana at the Concesionario Circuito Vial Lima Norte, Jr. Flor de Arayanes 361, Comas. Outside Lima, the exam is taken at the evaluation centre of the regional transport directorate.

What are the current urban speed limits in Peru?

Since 18 July 2022, D.S. N° 025-2021-MTC has set 30 km/h on calles and jirones and 50 km/h on avenidas. Vías expresas remain 80 km/h, and school and hospital zones 30 km/h. Where a carretera crosses a town, the limits are 30 km/h in commercial zones, 50 km/h in residential zones and 30 km/h near schools and hospitals. The MTC's 2018 balotario still shows the old 40 and 60 km/h figures.

How does Peru's driving-licence points system work?

Under D.S. N° 025-2021-MTC, every licence starts at zero points and infractions add points, which stay counted for two years. Reaching 100 points leads to a 6-month suspension the first time, 12 months the second time, and definitive cancellation the third time. A road-safety course can remove 30 points once every two years.

What is the legal alcohol limit for Class A-I drivers?

The RNT refers to the Código Penal limit of 0.5 grams of alcohol per litre of blood for drivers in general (0.25 g/l for public transport drivers). Driving above the limit, or refusing the test, is infraction M2: 50% of the UIT and a 3-year suspension. If the driver was involved in an accident, it is M1: 100% of the UIT, cancellation of the licence and definitive inhabilitation.

What safety equipment must a car carry in Peru?

Article 246 of the RNT lists a fire extinguisher and safety triangles or red reflective devices among the compulsory safety elements, and the Reglamento Nacional de Vehículos requires a spare wheel plus a jack and wheel wrench. If the vehicle breaks down, the triangles go 50 to 150 metres before and after it.

In what language is the official exam given?

The official knowledge exam and the MTC balotario are in Spanish. This practice bank is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation, not an official translation or simulation, and it keeps official Spanish legal terms.

What does the SOAT cover?

The SOAT covers personal injury and death in traffic accidents for the vehicle's occupants and for third parties such as pedestrians. It is valid for one year. According to the SBS, it is issued by insurance companies with nationwide cover, while the CAT is issued by AFOCATs for provincial public passenger transport.
