About the NYS Math Grade 4 Exam
The New York State Grade 4 Mathematics Test is part of the New York State Testing Program (NYSTP) and measures how well fourth-grade students have mastered the New York State P-12 Next Generation Learning Standards for Mathematics. It is administered each spring to public-school students in two sessions given on separate days: Session 1 consists entirely of multiple-choice questions, and Session 2 combines multiple-choice questions with 1-, 2-, and 3-credit constructed-response questions where students must show their work or explain their reasoning. The tests are untimed, so students receive as much time as they need within the regular school day. Grade 4 students are provided a ruler and a protractor and may not use a calculator. Content is organized around the Next Generation domains: Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Number and Operations-Fractions, Measurement and Data, and Geometry. Results are reported on a scale score with four performance levels, where Level 3 indicates the student is meeting the standards. Each year NYSED releases approximately 75 percent of the operational questions, along with answer keys and standard alignments, for review and use.
