1What is the value of 2^4 (2 raised to the 4th power)?
A.8
B.16
C.6
D.12
Explanation: An exponent tells how many times to multiply the base by itself. 2^4 means 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 16. The exponent does not mean multiply the base by the exponent.
2Using the Laws of Exponents, what is the value of 3^2 x 3^3?
A.3^6
B.3^5
C.9^5
D.6^5
Explanation: When multiplying powers with the same base, you add the exponents: 3^2 x 3^3 = 3^(2+3) = 3^5. The base stays the same; only the exponents are added.
3Which decimal is equivalent to the fraction 3/8?
A.0.38
B.0.625
C.0.83
D.0.375
Explanation: To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator: 3 divided by 8 = 0.375. This is a terminating decimal.
4What is the sum of -7 and 4?
A.3
B.-11
C.11
D.-3
Explanation: Adding a positive number to a negative number moves right on the number line. Starting at -7 and moving 4 units right lands on -3. The result keeps the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.
5What is the result of -12 - (-5)?
A.-17
B.7
C.17
D.-7
Explanation: Subtracting a negative is the same as adding its opposite: -12 - (-5) = -12 + 5 = -7. The two negative signs combine into addition.
6What is the product of -6 and -3?
A.-18
B.-9
C.9
D.18
Explanation: When multiplying two numbers with the same sign, the product is positive. (-6) x (-3) = 18. A negative times a negative gives a positive.
7What is the value of -3/4 + 1/2?
A.-1/4
B.-1/2
C.1/4
D.-5/4
Explanation: Rewrite 1/2 as 2/4 so the denominators match: -3/4 + 2/4 = -1/4. Add the numerators while keeping the common denominator.
8A diver descends at a steady rate, reaching -45 feet after 9 minutes. What is the diver's change in depth per minute?
A.-405 feet per minute
B.5 feet per minute
C.-9 feet per minute
D.-5 feet per minute
Explanation: Divide the total change in depth by the time: -45 feet divided by 9 minutes = -5 feet per minute. The negative sign shows the diver is moving downward.
9What is the absolute value of -9?
A.-9
B.0
C.18
D.9
Explanation: Absolute value is the distance of a number from zero on the number line, which is always non-negative. The distance from -9 to 0 is 9, so |-9| = 9.
10On a number line, what is the distance between -4 and 3?
A.7
B.1
C.-7
D.-1
Explanation: Distance on a number line is found by taking the absolute value of the difference: |3 - (-4)| = |7| = 7 units. Distance is always positive.

About the FAST Grade 7 Math Exam

The FAST Grade 7 Mathematics assessment is Florida's statewide progress-monitoring test aligned to the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards. It is a computer-adaptive test administered three times each year (PM1, PM2, and PM3), with the PM3 administration determining each student's official grade 7 achievement level. The test reports performance across four reporting categories: Number Sense and Operations and Algebraic Reasoning; Proportional Reasoning and Relationships; Geometric Reasoning; and Data Analysis and Probability. Each PM administration follows a blueprint of about 36-40 items that adjusts difficulty based on student responses. Results are reported on a 269-391 scale with five achievement levels, where Level 3 (330+) marks on-grade-level performance. The FAST replaced the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) beginning in the 2022-2023 school year.

FAST Grade 7 Math Study Tips from Top Performers

1Master proportional reasoning first, since percentages, unit rates, and scale problems appear across multiple reporting categories.
2Memorize the circle formulas (C = 2(pi)r and A = (pi)r^2) and practice using the provided reference sheet so you can find them quickly.
3Practice operations with rational numbers, including negatives and fractions, until the sign rules are automatic.
4Solve two-step equations and inequalities, remembering to reverse the inequality symbol when dividing by a negative number.
5Drill measures of center and spread (mean, median, mode, range, IQR) and know how outliers affect each one.
6Use the free, untimed structure to check every calculation, since careless arithmetic errors are the most common point losses.
