About the FAST Math Grade 5 Exam
The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) Grade 5 Mathematics test is a statewide, computer-adaptive progress-monitoring assessment aligned to Florida's B.E.S.T. (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) Mathematics standards. Fifth graders take it three times a year, PM1 in the fall, PM2 in the winter, and PM3 in the spring, so teachers can track growth toward grade-level proficiency. Each administration contains roughly 35 to 40 scored items distributed across four reporting categories: Number Sense and Operations with Whole Numbers; Number Sense and Operations with Fractions and Decimals; Algebraic Reasoning; and Geometric Reasoning, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability. The grade-5 content focuses on decimal operations to the thousandths, multiplying and dividing fractions, the volume of right rectangular prisms, the first-quadrant coordinate plane, order of operations, and converting measurement units. Results are reported on a 240 to 375 scale in five achievement levels, with Level 3 indicating on-grade-level performance, and a calculator is not permitted at this grade.
