1In the history of Brazilian educational thought, the transition from traditional pedagogy to progressive and renovative approaches represented a profound shift in the conception of the learner. How did Traditional Pedagogy fundamentally characterize the relationship between teacher, student, and knowledge?
A.The teacher is the central authority and exclusive transmitter of accumulated cultural knowledge, while the student acts as a passive recipient who assimilates content through repetition and memorization.
B.The student autonomously determines the curricular goals and directs pedagogical pacing through peer-led scientific projects, with the teacher acting solely as an observer.
C.The classroom operates as a democratic assembly where curriculum emerges entirely from spontaneous community dialogue and unguided social action.
D.Knowledge is constructed exclusively through technological teaching machines and pre-programmed behavioral modules without interpersonal mediation.
Explanation: Traditional Pedagogy (Pedagogia Tradicional) is teacher-centered (magistrocentrismo), viewing the educator as the supreme authority and knowledge holder. The student is regarded as a receptive, passive subject who must memorize and reproduce established intellectual and moral contents through verbal exposition, drills, and rigorous discipline.
2Published in 1932, the 'Manifesto dos Pioneiros da Educação Nova' (Manifesto of the Pioneers of New Education), drafted by Fernando de Azevedo and signed by leading Brazilian intellectuals including Anísio Teixeira, was a seminal turning point in national educational policy. What was the central structural proposal advocated by this manifesto?
A.The privatization of all secondary and higher education institutions under the financial management of religious orders to reduce municipal public expenditures.
B.The establishment of a unified, public, free, compulsory, and secular (laica) national education system under the constitutional responsibility of the State.
C.The complete abolition of formal schooling in favor of informal workplace apprenticeships administered directly by industrial manufacturing syndicates.
D.The restriction of secondary and higher education exclusively to technical agricultural vocations in rural provinces.
Explanation: The 1932 Manifesto dos Pioneiros da Educação Nova advocated for deep state responsibility in education, championing a single, democratic, secular (laico), free (gratuito), and compulsory school system (Escola Única) accessible to all social classes, establishing the foundations of modern Brazilian public education.
3In Dermeval Saviani's Historical-Critical Pedagogy (Pedagogia Histórico-Crítica), the educational process is conceived as a dialectical movement that elevates common sense to philosophical consciousness. What are the five articulated moments of Saviani's pedagogical method in classroom practice?
A.Behavioral conditioning, stimulus reinforcement, objective testing, statistical ranking, and remedial punishment.
B.Initial syncretic social practice, problematization, instrumentalization, catharsis, and synthesized conscious social practice.
C.Free sensory play, emotional catharsis, unscheduled socialization, verbal reflection, and spontaneous creative expression.
D.Textual memorization, grammar translation, oral recitation, written dictation, and classical exposition.
Explanation: Saviani formulates a five-step dialectical methodology rooted in historical materialism: 1) Initial Social Practice (common starting point of teacher and student); 2) Problematization (identifying social and pedagogical challenges); 3) Instrumentalization (appropriating scientific and cultural tools); 4) Catharsis (qualitative leap in understanding and consciousness); and 5) Final Social Practice (returning to social reality at a higher level of conscious transformation).
4In 'Pedagogy of the Oppressed' (Pedagogia do Oprimido), Paulo Freire offers a radical critique of what he terms 'banking education' (educação bancária). What defines this banking concept of education, and what alternative did Freire propose?
A.Banking education emphasizes financial literacy and market entrepreneurship; Freire proposed replacing it with purely theoretical classical scholasticism.
B.Banking education treats students as passive repositories where teachers 'deposit' knowledge; Freire proposed problem-posing education (educação problematizadora) grounded in dialogue and critical consciousness.
C.Banking education mandates standardized state examinations; Freire proposed eliminating all teachers and having students educate themselves in isolation.
D.Banking education focuses on vocational manual skills; Freire proposed an exclusively elitist literary curriculum reserved for academic scholars.
Explanation: Paulo Freire criticized 'banking education' for treating students as empty vessels receiving deposits of alienated knowledge from an all-knowing teacher, reproducing oppressive social structures. In its place, he proposed problem-posing, dialogical education (educação problematizadora/libertadora), where teacher and students become co-investigators of reality through critical dialogue and praxis (action-reflection).
5José Carlos Libâneo, in his classification of Brazilian pedagogical tendencies, distinguishes between Liberal and Progressive pedagogies. Which of the following correctly pairs a Progressive pedagogical tendency with its primary educational goal according to Libâneo?
A.Critical-Social Content Pedagogy (Crítico-Social dos Conteúdos) — ensuring that working-class students master universal scientific and cultural content as an instrument for social transformation.
B.Traditional Pedagogy — adapting individual students to existing capitalist market structures through specialized modular training.
C.Technicist Pedagogy — dismantling social inequalities through spontaneous student self-governance and non-directive counseling.
D.Progressive Renovated Pedagogy — reproducing traditional ecclesiastical dogmas through strict scholastic discipline.
Explanation: In Libâneo's typology, the Critical-Social Content tendency (Pedagogia Crítico-Social dos Conteúdos) emphasizes that mastering historical, scientific, and universal knowledge is essential for oppressed classes to understand and transform their socio-political reality, linking rigorous academic content to concrete social practice.
6In colonial Brazil, the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759 by the Marquis of Pombal led to the implementation of the Pombaline Educational Reforms (Aulas Régias). What was the major structural consequence of these reforms for Brazilian public instruction?
A.The immediate establishment of a free, universal, and integrated public university system across all Brazilian captaincies.
B.The disruption of a cohesive educational network and the introduction of isolated, poorly funded royal classes (Aulas Régias) taught by fragmented single-subject masters.
C.The total eradication of Portuguese Crown control over colonial schools in favor of municipal indigenous councils.
D.The adoption of mandatory bilingual Guarani-Portuguese instruction in all urban elementary schools.
Explanation: The Pombaline Reforms secularized education by expelling the Society of Jesus and creating royal classes (*Aulas Régias*) financed by the *subsídio literário*. However, this destroyed the existing structured Jesuit colleges without replacing them with an articulated educational system, leaving a fragmented, disjointed array of isolated courses lacking institutional cohesion.
7In sociological theories of education, Pierre Bourdieu and Jean-Claude Passeron conceptualize the school as an instrument of cultural reproduction. According to their theory in 'Reproduction in Education, Society and Culture', how does the educational system perpetuate social stratification?
A.By overtly teaching discriminatory racist doctrines to marginalized students during mandatory administrative assemblies.
B.By treating all students as cultural equals while rewarding the 'cultural capital' and linguistic codes transmitted naturally by dominant-class families, thereby exercising symbolic violence.
C.By strictly redistributing economic resources from private elite academies to impoverished rural community schools.
D.By forcing students from elite socioeconomic backgrounds to fail standardized examinations in order to achieve statistical parity.
Explanation: Bourdieu and Passeron argue that schools operate under the ideology of meritocratic neutrality, pretending to offer equal opportunities to all. However, schools evaluate and reward the specific cultural capital (linguistic habits, aesthetic codes, implicit knowledge) possessed by dominant social classes, converting social privilege into academic merit through symbolic violence (*violência simbólica*).
8Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser, in his seminal essay 'Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses', analyzes the structural role of public institutions in capitalist society. How does Althusser characterize the school system in relation to the State?
A.As a purely repressive state apparatus that maintains order solely through armed physical coercion and judicial imprisonment.
B.As the dominant Ideological State Apparatus (Aparelho Ideológico do Estado) that reproduces capitalist relations of production by instilling ruling-class ideology into children over prolonged, mandatory schooling years.
C.As an autonomous, politically neutral institution entirely disconnected from state power and economic production relations.
D.As a revolutionary vanguard institution designed by the state to overthrow private property and bourgeois governance.
Explanation: Althusser categorizes the school as the primary Ideological State Apparatus (AIE) of modern capitalism. Unlike Repressive State Apparatuses (which operate by violence and force), the school operates primarily through ideology, subjecting children to years of compulsory training that inculcates submission to the ruling ideology and reproduces the division of labor.
9The New School Movement (Escola Nova), strongly influenced by the progressive pragmatism of John Dewey and William Kilpatrick, introduced fundamental changes to Brazilian classroom dynamics in the early 20th century. What was its defining pedagogical principle?
A.Learning by doing (aprender fazendo), where the student is the active center of the learning process through hands-on experimentation, problem solving, and social cooperation.
B.Silent individual memorization of abstract theological catechisms without teacher interruption or peer contact.
C.Exclusively preparing students for civil service entrance examinations through repetitive pencil-and-paper drill sheets.
D.Eliminating all manual, artistic, and scientific activities to focus purely on classical Greek and Latin grammar.
Explanation: The Escola Nova movement (pedagogia ativa) shifted the educational focus from the teacher to the child (paidocentrism). Based on John Dewey's concept of 'learning by doing', it emphasized active inquiry, problem-solving, child curiosity, experiential learning, and democratic collaboration in the school environment.
10During the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship (1964-1985), educational policy was heavily restructured under the influence of MEC-USAID agreements and Law No. 5.692/1971. What characterized Technicist Pedagogy (Pedagogia Tecnicista) during this historical period?
A.A focus on humanistic philosophical critique, student political activism, and community-led popular literacy circles.
B.An emphasis on educational engineering, operational efficiency, behavioral objectives, technical skills training, and adapting the school system to the demands of rapid industrial-capitalist modernization.
C.The complete decentralization of school governance to local parent-teacher collectives without federal oversight.
D.The prohibition of all audiovisual technology and instructional media in secondary classrooms.
Explanation: Technicist Pedagogy in Brazil (embodied in Law 5.692/71) applied industrial systems engineering, behaviorism, and human capital theory to education. The teacher became an operational executor of pre-designed instructional packages, with learning defined as measurable behavioral changes aimed at training a skilled labor force for dependent capitalist industrialization.

Why is this question bank in English, and what are its limits?

The ENADE Pedagogia / PND is sat in Portuguese. This bank is an English-language multiple-choice study adaptation built from the official INEP reference matrix (Portaria nº 331/2025); it is not an official INEP translation, not endorsed by INEP or MEC, and not a simulation of the exam's language environment. Legal citations, official document names and Portuguese pedagogical terms (alfabetização, letramento, campos de experiências, AEE, PPP) are kept in Portuguese so you can recognise them on the real paper. It also covers only the multiple-choice knowledge base: it does not prepare you for the discursive question (Formação Geral Docente) or for the Avaliação da Prática carried out during the supervised teaching placement, both of which you must prepare for separately in Portuguese.
