About the NFPA Firefighter I Exam
The NFPA 1001 Firefighter I Certification is the entry-level professional qualification for structural firefighters in the United States; NFPA 1010 (2024) now carries the same Firefighter I requirements in Chapter 6. NFPA writes the standard; accredited state or regional agencies—such as the Nebraska State Fire Marshal's Office, California Office of the State Fire Marshal, and similar programs—set and deliver the written and skills exams and issue the certificate. California's Fire Fighter 1A written exam, for example, has 100 questions with a 120-minute limit. Content follows the Firefighter I job performance requirements: general requirements, fire department communications, fireground operations, and preparedness and maintenance.
