What hazardous materials training is required before you can be certified Firefighter I?

Why does the fire service transmit in clear text instead of ten-codes?

Ten-codes are department-specific, so the same code can mean different things on one fireground. Clear text removes the ambiguity that causes missed evacuation orders and delayed Mayday responses at multi-agency incidents.
What is span of control, and what is the recommended ratio?
Span of control is the number of people or resources one supervisor directly manages: 3 to 7, with 5 as the optimum. When a supervisor exceeds that range, the incident commander adds divisions, groups, or branches rather than letting one officer try to track too many crews. It is a safety control, not just an organizational preference.
Unity of command vs. unified command: what is the difference?
Unity of command means every person reports to exactly one supervisor, so you take direction from your officer and not from whoever is nearest. Unified command means several agencies with jurisdiction (fire, police, EMS) jointly set incident objectives while each retains its own chain of command. Mixing these two up is a classic exam trap.
Fire triangle vs. fire tetrahedron: what is the fourth element and why does it matter?
The triangle is fuel, heat, and oxygen. The tetrahedron adds the self-sustaining chemical chain reaction. The distinction is practical, not academic: it explains why dry chemical and clean agents extinguish fire by interrupting the chain reaction without removing heat, fuel, or oxygen.
Name the four stages of fire development in a compartment.
Incipient, growth, fully developed, and decay. Flashover is not a stage; it is the rapid transition from growth into fully developed. Watch the trap in the other direction too: a ventilation-limited fire can decay simply from lack of oxygen and then re-intensify the moment you open a door.
Which mode of heat transfer spreads fire to a building across the street?
Radiation. Conduction needs direct contact through a solid and convection needs moving air or gases, but radiant heat crosses open space in straight lines with nothing in between. That is why exposure lines are placed on the nearest structure even when nothing is physically touching the fire building.
What conditions warn of impending flashover, and what do you do?
Rapidly building heat that drives you to the floor, a thickening hot gas layer dropping toward you, and rollover, which is flame dancing across the ceiling inside the smoke layer. Ceiling temperatures approach roughly 1,100 F (about 593 C). Cool the gas layer with short bursts overhead and be ready to withdraw immediately.
Backdraft vs. flashover: what causes each?
Flashover is heat-driven, when everything in the compartment reaches ignition temperature at nearly the same moment. Backdraft is oxygen-driven, when a hot, oxygen-starved, smoldering space explodes because air is suddenly admitted. Backdraft signs include pulsing or puffing smoke at openings, smoke-stained windows, little or no visible flame, and whistling or sucking sounds.
Which NFPA standard now covers turnout gear, SCBA, and PASS devices?
NFPA 1970 (2025 edition, effective September 29, 2024). It consolidated NFPA 1971 structural ensembles, 1975 work apparel, 1981 open-circuit SCBA, and 1982 PASS devices into one standard, and it made particulate-blocking hoods mandatory. Legacy course material still quotes the four old numbers.
Name the three layers of a structural turnout coat and what each does.
Outer shell for flame and abrasion resistance, moisture barrier to keep water, steam, and chemicals from reaching you, and thermal liner for the bulk of the insulation. Compressing the layers, by kneeling or by a tight strap or SCBA waist belt, squeezes out the trapped air and causes compression burns at that spot.
At what point does an SCBA end-of-service-time indicator (low-air alarm) activate?
At 33 percent of the cylinder's rated service time. NFPA raised it from the NIOSH minimum of 25 percent beginning with the 2013 edition of NFPA 1981, now folded into NFPA 1970, specifically to give firefighters a bigger reserve for self-rescue. The alarm means start leaving, not finish the task.
What is the rule of air management?
Know how much air you have at all times, and exit the hazard area before the low-air alarm sounds. The reserve behind that alarm belongs to the exit, not to your working time. Consumption climbs sharply with workload, heat, and stress, so a cylinder rated for 30 minutes on a breathing machine rarely gives a working firefighter 30 minutes.
How does a PASS device alert others that you are down?
It sounds automatically after roughly 30 seconds without motion, preceded by a shorter pre-alarm you can clear by moving, and it can also be triggered manually. On integrated units it arms automatically when the cylinder valve is opened. Never enter an IDLH atmosphere with it switched off or in a pocket where motion keeps resetting it.
What is rehab, and which NFPA standard now covers it?
Rehab is mandatory rotation out of the work cycle for rest, rehydration, active cooling or warming, food, and medical monitoring of vital signs. The requirements formerly in NFPA 1584 now live in NFPA 1580 (2025), Standard for Emergency Responder Occupational Health and Wellness. Cardiac events remain a leading cause of firefighter line-of-duty death, which is what rehab exists to prevent.
When do you pull a 1.75-inch handline instead of a 2.5-inch handline?
The 1.75-inch line is the standard residential attack line: roughly 150 to 180 gpm, mobile, and workable by two firefighters. The 2.5-inch line is for commercial occupancies, heavy fire loads, long stretches, and defensive positions at around 250 gpm, but it needs more people and is far harder to advance and maneuver.
What nozzle pressure does a solid-bore handline need, and what does a combination fog nozzle need?
A solid-bore handline nozzle operates at 50 psi nozzle pressure; a solid-bore master stream uses 80 psi. A standard combination fog nozzle needs 100 psi, though low-pressure fog nozzles are built for 50 or 75 psi. Nozzle pressure is a fixed design value: the pump operator adds friction loss and elevation on top of it.
Direct, indirect, and combination attack: what is the difference?
Direct attack puts water straight onto the burning fuel, usually with a straight or solid stream. Indirect attack fogs water into the superheated upper gas layer from a doorway or outside opening to generate steam. Combination attack works a rotating O, Z, or T pattern to hit the gas layer and the burning fuel in one operation.
What happens to friction loss when you double the flow through a hoseline?
It roughly quadruples, because friction loss varies with the square of the flow. It also rises directly with hose length and drops sharply as hose diameter increases. That relationship is why a long stretch gets larger-diameter supply hose rather than simply more pump pressure.
Match the extinguisher class to the fuel: A, B, C, D, and K.
A is ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, and cloth. B is flammable liquids and gases. C is energized electrical equipment. D is combustible metals such as magnesium and sodium. K is cooking oils and fats in commercial kitchens. Class C only means the agent is non-conductive; de-energize the equipment and it becomes an A or B fire.
What does PASS stand for when you operate a fire extinguisher?
Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side. Aiming at the flames instead of the base is the classic failure. Do not confuse this PASS with the PASS alert device on your SCBA; Firefighter I exams test both terms and sometimes in the same section.
Under NFPA 291, what flow does a green hydrant bonnet indicate?
Class A, meaning 1,000 to 1,499 gpm. Light blue is Class AA at 1,500 gpm or greater, orange is Class B at 500 to 999 gpm, and red is Class C at under 500 gpm. Public hydrant barrels are chrome yellow. The scheme is a recommendation, so confirm what your jurisdiction actually uses.
Which water supplies count as static sources, and how do you use them?
Static sources are non-pressurized: ponds, lakes, rivers, cisterns, and swimming pools. You reach them by drafting through hard suction hose and a strainer, which requires the pump to create a vacuum. Hydrants are a pressurized municipal supply, and a tanker or tender shuttle with portable drop tanks covers areas beyond hydrant reach.
What is the proper climbing angle for a ground ladder, and how do you set it without measuring?
About 75 degrees. Place the butt out from the building one-quarter of the ladder's working length, so a 24-foot working length puts the butt 6 feet out. Verify it by standing with your toes at the butt and arms straight ahead: your palms should rest on a rung at shoulder height.
How high should the ladder tip be for roof access versus a window rescue?
For roof access, extend the tip 3 to 5 rungs, roughly 3 feet, above the roofline so crews can find and mount it in heavy smoke. For a window rescue, set the tip even with or just below the sill so the opening stays clear for the victim. To work at a window, place the tip alongside the opening instead.
Which way does the fly section face on a fire service extension ladder, and how do you secure yourself on it?
Fire service practice raises extension ladders fly out, away from the building, because fire service ladders are built and rated for that loading. Before working with both hands, secure yourself with a leg lock or a ladder belt, and have the ladder heeled at the butt or tied off at the tip.
What are the three working ends of a halligan bar?
The fork or claw for prying and gapping, the adz for prying and for driving, and the pick, a tapered point for punching locks, sheet metal, and tempered glass. Paired with a flathead axe or maul it becomes "the irons," the standard two-tool forcible entry set carried on nearly every truck company.
What does "try before you pry" mean, and what is the gap-set-force sequence?
Try the door first, because unlocked doors get forced needlessly every day. If it is locked, size up the swing direction and lock location, then gap the door away from the jamb, set the tool deep enough to catch the door without burying it in the stop, and force. Which end you use and which way you pry depend on the swing and how the door sits in the frame.
What is a K-tool used for?
Through-the-lock entry. The K-tool slips over the lock cylinder, and striking or prying pulls the cylinder out of the door; a key tool then operates the exposed lock mechanism directly. It does far less damage than conventional forcing, which makes it the preferred method on commercial storefronts and secured occupancies.
What is tactical ventilation, and why must it be coordinated with the attack crew?
Tactical ventilation is the planned, systematic removal of heat and smoke and its replacement with fresh air. Uncoordinated ventilation feeds oxygen to a ventilation-limited fire and can drive rapid growth or backdraft along the new flow path. Open when the hoseline is charged and in position, never before.
Horizontal vs. vertical ventilation: when do you choose vertical?
Horizontal ventilation uses existing doors and windows and is faster and safer. Vertical ventilation cuts an opening in the roof directly over the fire so heat and smoke rise out, and it is chosen for attic and cockloft fires and heavy smoke in a structure with a sound roof. Vertical puts crews above the fire, so it demands two means of egress and a charged line in place.
How does positive pressure ventilation (PPV) work?
A blower is set back from the inlet so its cone of air seals the entire doorway, pressurizing the building and pushing smoke out a chosen exhaust opening. Create the exhaust opening first and keep it roughly the size of the inlet. Negative pressure ventilation is the opposite approach: a fan placed in the opening pulls smoke out.
What is the difference between life safety rope and utility rope?
Life safety rope supports people during rescue, rappelling, and fall protection, and must be block creel construction of continuous filament virgin fiber (requirements now in NFPA 2500, which absorbed NFPA 1983). Utility rope hoists tools, secures objects, and cordons areas, and never supports a person. Life safety rope that took a fall load or shows damage is retired from life safety use.
Which knot for which job: clove hitch, bowline, becket bend, figure eight on a bight?
Clove hitch attaches a rope to an object such as a hoisted tool or a ladder rung, and is normally backed up with a half hitch or safety knot. Bowline forms a fixed loop that will not slip or tighten under load. Becket or sheet bend joins two ropes of unequal diameter. Figure eight on a bight makes a strong loop anywhere along the rope.
What is the difference between salvage and overhaul?
Salvage protects property from water, smoke, and weather during and after the fire using covers, water chutes, catchalls, and removal of contents. Overhaul is the systematic search for hidden fire and extension after the main body is knocked down, opening walls and ceilings. Salvage saves property; overhaul makes the building safe to leave.
Why do firefighters keep SCBA on during overhaul?
Because the visible smoke clearing does not mean the air is safe. Carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and airborne carcinogens persist at dangerous levels and cannot be detected by sight or smell. Air monitoring must clear the atmosphere before masks come off, and removing them early during overhaul is a documented contributor to long-term firefighter illness.
Name the five construction types and identify which fails fastest under fire.
Type I fire-resistive, Type II noncombustible, Type III ordinary (masonry walls with wood joists), Type IV heavy timber or mass timber, and Type V wood frame. Type V fails fastest because the structure itself is fuel, and the lightweight engineered trusses and I-joists common in modern Type V construction can fail in minutes.
Why is a lightweight wood truss roof more dangerous than a conventional rafter roof?
The metal gusset plates bite only a fraction of an inch into the wood and pull loose quickly under heat, and a truss is an interconnected system, so one failed member can drop the whole assembly. The open truss space also gives fire a concealed lateral path across the entire roof or floor before anyone sees it.
Primary search vs. secondary search: what makes them different?
Primary search is a rapid search for life carried out during fire attack and under fire conditions, aimed at finding victims fast. Secondary search is slow and thorough, covering the entire structure after the fire is controlled, and should be done by a different crew so a second set of eyes catches what the first missed. Both results are reported to command.
Where do you sweep during a primary search that new firefighters miss?
Elevated surfaces: beds, cribs, couches, bathtubs, and closets, plus behind doors and under windows where people collapse trying to escape. Children hide rather than flee, so check under beds and inside closets. Stay low, keep contact with a wall or the hoseline, and sweep with a tool to extend your reach beyond arm's length.
What does VEIS stand for, and why is the "I" the critical step?
Vent, Enter, Isolate, Search: a targeted search of one room from a ladder or exterior opening. Isolate means closing the door to the rest of the structure immediately after you enter. Skip it and your ventilation opening becomes a flow path that draws fire directly to you and the victim you came for.
What does the two-in/two-out rule require?
In an IDLH atmosphere, at least two firefighters must work together inside and maintain visual or voice contact, while at least two remain outside, equipped and ready to perform rescue. It comes from OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134(g)(4). The one recognized exception is an immediate rescue of a known, savable victim.
What is the LUNAR Mayday report?
Location, Unit, Name, Assignment, Resources needed or air Remaining: the information a trapped firefighter transmits so the rapid intervention team knows where to go and how long they have. Call the Mayday early. Firefighters who wait until their air is nearly gone rarely survive. Then activate your PASS and stay on the radio.
What is a RIT or RIC, and what does it stage?
A Rapid Intervention Team or Crew is a dedicated crew standing by solely to rescue lost or trapped firefighters; it performs no other fireground work. Typical staged equipment includes a RIT air pack with a universal air connection, forcible entry tools, a search rope, a thermal imager, and ground ladders for a secondary way out.
What do you check on your SCBA at the start of every shift?
Cylinder pressure at full, generally 90 percent of rated pressure or higher; facepiece and lens condition; harness, straps, and buckles; regulator and low-pressure hose; and function of the low-air alarm and PASS. Finish with a positive-pressure and leak check on the facepiece seal, and document the check, because it is both a job performance requirement and a record.
Why is facial hair prohibited under an SCBA facepiece?
Anything between the sealing surface and skin breaks the seal. A positive-pressure SCBA then leaks air out faster, shortening your working time, and contaminants can be drawn in during heavy breathing. OSHA respiratory protection rules bar facial hair in the sealing area, and annual fit testing is required for the specific facepiece you are issued.
How often is fire hose service tested, and at what pressure?
NFPA 1962 requires service testing at least annually, plus testing within one year of manufacture or before first use, and after repairs or suspected damage. Attack and forestry hose is tested to a minimum of 300 psi, supply hose to a minimum of 200 psi. Testing exposes weak jackets, damaged linings, and leaking couplings before they fail on a fire.

Is Firefighter I still under NFPA 1001, or has it moved to NFPA 1010?
It has moved. NFPA 1010, Standard on Professional Qualifications for Firefighters, 2024 edition, was issued December 21, 2023 with an effective date of January 10, 2024, and it consolidated NFPA 1001, 1002, 1003, and 1005 into one document. Firefighter I is now Chapter 6 and Firefighter II is Chapter 7, with a new Support Person level in Chapter 5. Pro Board set June 30, 2026 as the compliance date for its accredited agencies, so certification testing in 2026 is generally to NFPA 1010. NFPA's own analysis and state gap analyses describe most Firefighter I and II changes as editorial rather than technical, so NFPA 1001 study material remains largely usable. These flashcards use the NFPA 1010 (2024) numbering.
How many questions are on the Firefighter I written exam?
NFPA does not set the item count. NFPA writes job performance requirements; the accredited certifying entity builds and administers the exam. In practice, 100 multiple-choice questions is the most common format. The State Firefighters' and Fire Marshals' Association of Texas, for instance, publishes a Structural Firefighter I written exam of 100 questions with a 2-hour limit. Check your own certifying entity's candidate handbook, because the count, time limit, and item bank all differ by state.
What score do I need to pass the Firefighter I exam?
Seventy percent is by far the most common minimum, but it is set by the certifying entity, not by NFPA. Arizona's certification system documents 70% as a threshold established through its own review process with subject matter experts; Washington's State Fire Marshal's Office requires a raw score of 70% or higher; and Texas SFFMA applies 70% to all its written exams. Practical skills evaluations are scored separately on a pass/fail basis by station.
Is the written exam the only test for Firefighter I?
No. Certification requires both a written exam and a separate practical skills evaluation, and you must pass both. Skills are graded pass/fail at individual stations covering things like SCBA donning, ladder raises, hose advancement, forcible entry, and search. Attempt limits differ by entity: Washington allows two attempts on a specific task and no more than four failed attempts across the whole skills test.
What happens if I fail the Firefighter I written exam?
There is no national retake rule, because NFPA does not administer the exam. Waiting periods and attempt limits come from your certifying entity and vary widely. Texas SFFMA requires a minimum of one week between exams plus repayment of the exam fee. Arizona allows three attempts with a 30-day waiting period before each retest, and requires you to repeat the training program after three successive failures. Get the exact policy from your entity's candidate handbook before you rebook.
What is the Firefighter I pass rate?
There is no published national pass rate. NFPA does not test candidates, and neither Pro Board nor IFSAC publishes aggregate pass rates for Firefighter I. Results are held by each of the 75-plus accredited certifying entities, and only a few publish figures. Treat any single national percentage you see quoted as unsourced. What is consistent is the standard you are measured against: usually 70% on the written exam plus a pass on every required skill station.
What is the difference between Pro Board and IFSAC?
Both are accrediting bodies, not testing bodies. The National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board), founded in 1972, accredits more than 75 agencies that certify candidates to the NFPA professional qualification standards. The International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) runs a peer-reviewed accreditation system for certifying entities and for postsecondary fire and emergency degree programs. Many state agencies hold both accreditations, and the seals on your certificate are what make it portable between jurisdictions.
Do I need hazmat certification before Firefighter I?
You need hazmat training, and in most states you do not need separate hazmat certification. NFPA 1010 section 6.1 requires Firefighter I candidates to meet the hazmat Awareness and Operations requirements of NFPA 470 plus two mission-specific competencies: Personal Protective Equipment and Product Control. Many entities issue you the hazmat certificate anyway if you complete the task book, but the binding requirement at the Firefighter I level is completion of the training.
