About the NC HVAC Exam

North Carolina HVAC licensing requires passing a technical exam and a business and law exam, both administered by PSI. Heating licenses are H1 (steam, vapor or hot water), H2 (forced air with mechanical refrigeration capacity in excess of 15 tons) and H3 (15 tons or less); Class I covers all structures and Class II is limited to single-family detached dwellings. A separate license from the State Board of Refrigeration Contractors covers commercial refrigeration.

How do the NC HVAC vocabulary games work?

There are 4 games built on 20 NC HVAC terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.

Where do the NC HVAC terms come from?

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating & Fire Sprinkler Contractors / NC State Board of Refrigeration Contractors content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.

What heating license do I need for residential HVAC work in North Carolina?

Most residential HVAC contractors need an H3 license (forced air systems 15 tons or less). H3 Class 2 limits you to single-family homes, while H3 Class 1 allows work in any building. H2 is needed for systems over 15 tons.

How do I qualify for an NC heating contractor license?

You need 4,000 hours of on-site experience (up to half may be academic credit), must pass a 4-hour technical exam and a 90-minute business/law exam (both 70%), and pass a background check.
