About the FL HVAC Exam
Florida licenses Class A air-conditioning contractors without a system-capacity limit and limits Class B contractors to 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 BTU of heating per system. The open-book Class A trade exam has 130 scored questions in 7.5 hours; Class B has 80 scored questions in 5 hours. Both paths also require the 120-question, 6.5-hour Business & Finance exam. Applicants generally document four years of qualifying experience, including one year as a foreman. A FICO-derived score of 660 or higher satisfies the Board's credit-score benchmark; an applicant below 660 must complete an approved 14-hour financial-responsibility course.
