About the EPA 608 Universal Exam

The EPA Section 608 Universal certification authorizes technicians to service all stationary refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment. It combines a Core section with Type I (small appliances), Type II (medium- through very-high-pressure), and Type III (low-pressure) sections, for 100 multiple-choice questions, and requires 70% on each closed-book, proctored section to pass. The certification does not expire.

Exam sponsor: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) via approved certifying organizations. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

100 multiple-choice questions: 25 each for Core, Type I, Type II, and Type III. Universal requires passing all four as closed-book, proctored tests, either in one sitting or by combining separately passed proctored sections; an open-book Core can never be carried into Universal. This practice bank mirrors the four-section structure.

Time Limit

No federal time limit; set by the provider (Mainstream allows up to 3 hours)

Passing Score

70% on each closed-book, proctored section (18 of 25 correct, i.e., 72% in practice) for Universal. A mail-in/open-book Type I route requires 84% but cannot be combined into Universal.

Exam / Certification Fees

Set by the EPA-approved testing organization; verify current fee

How do the EPA 608 Universal vocabulary games work?

There are 4 games built on 20 EPA 608 Universal terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.

Where do the EPA 608 Universal terms come from?

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) via approved certifying organizations content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.
