Constructive alignment

Learning outcomes, teaching activities, and assessment should point to the same intended performance. Misalignment can reward work that does not demonstrate the course outcome.

Active learning

Learners actively retrieve, apply, discuss, decide, or create rather than only receive information. The activity should be chosen for the outcome, not used as entertainment.

How should a teaching strategy be selected?

Match it to the content, setting, learner attributes and needs, desired outcome, and delivery method. A strategy that works in one context may not fit another.

Curriculum mapping

A visual or structured record showing where outcomes are introduced, reinforced, and assessed across the curriculum. It reveals gaps, unnecessary duplication, and weak alignment.

Start with the program and institutional mission, philosophy, and intended graduate outcomes. Then align content, learning experiences, assessment, and resource decisions to that foundation.

What is the CNE examination format?

The NLN CNE examination has 150 three-option multiple-choice items in 3 hours. Only 130 items count toward the score; 20 are unscored pretest items that candidates cannot identify.

How is the CNE passing score set?

NLN uses a modified Angoff standard-setting process. The passing point can vary by test form and is equated across forms, so there is no single published fixed raw score.

Who is eligible for initial CNE certification?

Candidates need valid licensure or other documentation of unencumbered practice in their country of residence and must meet one of NLN's nursing graduate-education pathways; the non-education pathway also requires at least two years of academic nursing-program employment in the prior five years.

When can an unsuccessful CNE candidate retest?

NLN requires a new application and retest fee. Retesting becomes available after 90 days; an individual may test no more than four times per year, once every 90 days and no more than once per quarter.
