Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the ASE A6 exam and how much time do I get?

The certification version of A6 has 60 total questions - 50 scored plus 10 unscored research questions - with a 90-minute time limit, per ASE's official 2026 Automobile Study Guide. The shorter recertification version (for renewing an existing A6 credential) has 25 questions and a 45-minute limit.

What are the ASE A6 content areas and their weights?

ASE's official task list breaks A6 into five areas: General Electrical/Electronic System Diagnosis (26%, 13 questions), Battery and Starting System Diagnosis and Repair (18%, 9 questions), Charging System Diagnosis and Repair (10%, 5 questions), Lighting Systems Diagnosis and Repair (12%, 6 questions), and Body Electrical Systems Diagnosis and Repair (34%, 17 questions) - the largest single area, covering HMI/instrument clusters, comfort accessories, heated/cooled accessories, security, and SRS/safety systems.

What's the passing score for ASE A6?

ASE does not publish a fixed passing percentage; scores are computer-scaled rather than a straight percent-correct. ASE's own general study guidance is to aim for about 70% correct on the scored questions, but the actual cut score for a given test form is set psychometrically.

How long do I have to wait to retake ASE A6 if I fail?

ASE requires a flat 30 full-day wait before you can purchase and schedule the same test again, regardless of how many times you've failed it - ASE does not use an escalating wait period like some other certification bodies.

Do I need employer sponsorship to take the ASE A6 test?

No. Anyone can create a myASE account and register for the A6 test on their own. However, actual certification requires passing the test AND documenting 2 years of relevant hands-on work experience (formal training can substitute for part of that requirement).
