Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the ASE A4 exam, and how is it timed?

The A4 certification test has 50 total questions -- 40 scored plus 10 unscored pretest questions used to develop future exams -- with a 60-minute time limit. You won't know which 10 are unscored, so answer every question. The shorter 20-question recertification version allows 30 minutes.

What's the ASE A4 passing score?

ASE converts your raw number of correct scored answers into a scaled score, and you need a scaled score of 70 to pass -- this same threshold applies across nearly all ASE tests. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the specific test form you're given, there's no single 'percent correct' target that works across every version, and ASE does not publish first-time pass-rate statistics for A4.

How long does A4 certification last, and what's the retake policy if I fail?

ASE A4 certification is valid for 5 years. Whether you pass or fail, ASE requires a flat 30-day wait before you can purchase and schedule the same test again. Unlike some certification bodies, ASE does not lengthen the wait after repeated failures -- it's always a 30-day cooldown per attempt, with no cap on total attempts.

Do I need employer sponsorship to take the ASE A4 exam?

No. Anyone can register and sit for the A4 test directly through ASE -- no employer sponsorship is required to test. Full certification does require documentation of relevant hands-on work experience (typically 2 years, with approved vocational training substitutable for up to 1 year), but that documentation is submitted separately and doesn't gate your ability to sit for the exam.

What are the four content areas on the A4 test, and how are they weighted?

Per the official ASE task list: Steering Systems Diagnosis and Repair (12 questions, 30%), Suspension Systems Diagnosis and Repair (12 questions, 30%), Wheel Alignment Diagnosis, Adjustment, and Repair (11 questions, 28%), and Wheel and Tire Diagnosis and Service (5 questions, 12%) -- 40 scored questions total.
