Distribution System Components FundamentalsYou are here
Start with pipe materials (PVC, DIP, HDPE, AC), valve operation sequences, main break isolation, hydrant testing, flushing procedures, service connections, and storage/reservoir basics — the largest content area, especially at Class I–II.
Equipment: Install, Operate, Maintain & Repair
Study centrifugal and PD pump curves, parallel/series operation, NPSH and cavitation, motor and control maintenance, corrosion-control equipment, and hydraulics math (pressure = head × 0.433, Hazen-Williams, WHP formula, pressure zone concepts).
Water Quality Monitoring & Lab Analysis
Cover chlorine residuals, DBP MCLs (TTHM/HAA5), lead/copper ALs, pH, alkalinity, hardness, water age management, and lab/sampling procedures — this area grows from 15% at Class I to 30% at Class IV.
Security, Safety, Administration & Public Interactions
Complete OSHA confined-space (1910.146), LOTO (1910.147), and excavation (1926 Subpart P) review; master the cross-connection control program task (backflow device hierarchy and AWWA M14); cover SDWA record-keeping and public notification. Finish with timed full-length practice sets.
