Can You Take the VA Water Operator Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Board pre-approval from Virginia DPOR is required before PSI will schedule an examination
- •A year of full-time experience is defined by 18VAC160-30-100 as at least 1,760 hours or at least 220 workdays in a 12-month period, and exceeding either figure in one 12-month period still counts as only one year
- •Experience must be gained under the direct supervision of a licensee in the same category at a facility of equal or higher classification (18VAC160-30-95)
- •Substitutions of education, training credits, or cross-category experience may not exceed 50 percent of the required experience (18VAC160-30-130)
- •A Class 1 license in either category also requires an existing Class 2 license in that same category
- •Applicants must disclose felony convictions within 20 years and misdemeanor convictions involving lying, cheating, or stealing within 3 years (18VAC160-30-60 D)

Retake Policy
A failed examination carries a 10-day wait before retesting. Candidates may retake throughout the 24-month eligibility window that begins with Board approval by paying the examination administration fee directly to PSI; no new DPOR application is required unless that 24-month window expires (18VAC160-30-70 B).

Exam Content Breakdown
Based on the official Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) content outline
ABC/WPI Water Treatment Operator Class IV blueprint: 35 of 100 scored items covering coagulation, filtration, membranes, disinfection dosage and contact time, corrosion control, chemical feed, and SCADA-based process adjustment. The parallel wastewater area, Treatment Process Evaluation and Adjustment, carries 42 of 100 items.
ABC/WPI Water Treatment Class IV: 20 of 100 items on intakes, pumps, valves, motors, blowers, analyzers, PLC and SCADA hardware, asset management, and pump efficiency testing. The wastewater equivalent, Equipment Evaluation, Maintenance and/or Operation, carries 28 of 100 items.
ABC/WPI Water Treatment Class IV: 17 of 100 items, 11 of them recall level, on sampling, preservation, turbidity, residual chlorine, alkalinity, hardness, microbiology, and emerging contaminants. The wastewater Laboratory Analysis area carries 15 of 100 items with zero calculation items.
ABC/WPI Water Treatment Class IV: 14 of 100 items on surface water and groundwater characteristics, well static and pumping levels, reservoir and watershed inspection, contamination sources, and source water protection planning. This area has no direct wastewater counterpart.
ABC/WPI Water Treatment Class IV: 14 of 100 items on chemical handling and SDS use, confined space and lockout/tagout, emergency response, facility and cyber security, regulatory compliance and public notification, records, budgets, procurement, and supervision.
