Exam Content Breakdown
Based on the official City & Guilds content outline
Purpose of periodic inspection under BS 7671 and the Electricity at Work Regulations, assessing existing installations for continued service, deterioration, damage and alterations, visual inspection, and recommended inspection intervals
GN3 recommended 100% sample, justifying and recording reduced samples on large installations, selecting a representative sample, and extending the extent when defects are found
Completing the Electrical Installation Condition Report, schedule of inspections, schedule of test results, declarations, recommended next inspection date, and the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory outcome
Applying C1 (danger present), C2 (potentially dangerous), C3 (improvement recommended) and FI (further investigation) using engineering judgement, with GN3 guidance
Dead and live test sequence: continuity of protective conductors and ring finals, insulation resistance, polarity, Ze, Zs, prospective fault current and RCD testing
Agreeing and recording the extent of the installation covered, standard limitations (concealed cables), operational limitations, and the absence of records
Safe isolation (prove-test-prove), risk assessment on deteriorated installations, protecting equipment and people, and returning the installation to service
Comparing measured values against BS 7671 maximum Zs and minimum IR, applying temperature correction, trend analysis against previous reports, and instrument calibration
