5.1 Trap Design, Sizing, & Prohibited Traps

Board Rule 363.5(g)(1)(G) reinforces it, requiring an hour of classroom time on "design and prohibited traps; sizing and installation of traps and trap arms; and trap protection." A trap is a two-dollar fitting holding back the entire sanitary sewer — and it is the last barrier between a building's occupants and methane, hydrogen sulfide, and pathogens.


1. How a Water-Seal Trap Works

The seal is nothing more than the water left standing between the dip and the weir after the fixture drains. Every rule in this chapter exists to make sure that water is deep enough to resist pressure, shallow enough to be pushed out and replaced on the next use, and shaped so the trap scours itself clean.

A properly installed trap must:

  • pass water freely with no restriction;
  • be self-cleaning (self-scouring), so solids do not settle in the dip;
  • hold a seal of not less than 2 inches and not more than 4 inches (traps of special design excepted);
  • have no interior partitions and no moving or mechanical parts to maintain the seal;
  • be accessible for cleaning, and set true to its seal and level in both directions.

That list is the answer to one of the Board's own published sample questions: the characteristic that is not a requirement of a properly installed trap is that it has mechanical or moving parts.


2. One Trap per Fixture — and the Three Exceptions

The general rule: each plumbing fixture shall be separately trapped by an approved water-seal trap, placed as close as possible to the fixture outlet. Two traps in series on one fixture drain (a "double trap") is prohibited, because the air locked between them stops flow.

A food waste grinder or a dishwasher may discharge into a wye branch on the tailpiece of a kitchen sink ahead of that sink's trap; it does not get its own trap in residential work.


3. Required Trap Sizes

A trap is sized to the fixture, and a trap shall not be larger than the fixture drain to which it is connected. Oversizing is a real violation, not a harmless margin: an oversized trap loses velocity, stops scouring, and silts up.

4. Prohibited Traps

The code lists prohibited designs explicitly. Learn the list and the reason for each — exam items usually ask why.

[!NOTE] The S-trap trap. Retrofits under old lavatories are the most common S-trap violation in the field. If the trap arm turns down before it reaches a vent, you have built an S-trap even if you used a P-trap fitting. The cure is a properly located vent, an approved air admittance valve where permitted, or re-routing the arm — never a deeper trap.


5. Materials, Joints, and Accessibility

  • Approved trap materials include cast iron, copper alloy, and plastic meeting the referenced standards; tubular plastic waste fittings conform to ASTM F409 and metallic waste fittings to ASME A112.18.2.
  • Slip joints are permitted only on the trap inlet, the trap outlet, and within the trap seal — never buried in a wall or under a slab on a concealed drain line.
  • Concealed slip joints require an access panel or utility space at least as large as the fitting, arranged so the trap can be removed.
  • Traps must be protected from freezing. A trap in an unheated crawl space, an exterior wall, or an unconditioned garage needs insulation, heat, or relocation.
  • Grease, oil, sand, and lint interceptors are traps in the code's sense and follow their own sizing and maintenance rules (see Chapter 10).
