Core Principle: The Board's own examination review course opens with this instruction: studying a plumbing code should begin with learning and understanding the proper plumbing terms and their meanings found in the chapter on definitions. The codes use only correct plumbing terms and contain no slang, and the examination is written the same way. A candidate who calls a closet bend a "toilet elbow" on the job will still read the word closet bend on the screen.
Many written items are pure definition questions. Many more are dimensional questions that are only answerable once you know which surface the dimension is measured from. This section covers both.

2. Vent System Terms
The two most confused terms on any plumbing exam are stack vent and vent stack. They are not interchangeable.

4. The Four Reference Elevations
Almost every dimensional rule in the code is measured from one of four surfaces. Confusing them is the fastest way to miss a question you actually knew.

5. Texas Licensing Terms (Board Rule 361.1)
The Board maintains its own definitions section, and the review course lists 22 TAC 361.1 as required reading for this exam.
- Plumbing — the material and labor used in installing, maintaining, extending, or altering piping, fixtures, appliances, and appurtenances in connection with sanitary drainage, storm drainage, venting systems, and public or private water supply systems.
- Direct supervision — the on-the-job oversight and direction of a registered Plumber's Apprentice or licensee by a licensed plumber who ensures that materials are prepared per the manufacturer's recommendations and the adopted code, and that the work is properly installed. A narrow exception added effective January 2025 permits remote, real-time audio-visual direct supervision for repair and replacement of existing fixtures not involving gas appliances on one- and two-family dwellings, and only for personnel meeting specific experience and registration criteria.
- Responsible Master Plumber (RMP) — the Master Plumber designated by a plumbing company who is responsible for the company's plumbing work, holds the required certificate of insurance on file with the Board, and secures permits.
- Approved / listed / labeled — carried over from the model codes: approved means acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction; listed means published in a list by an approved testing agency; labeled means bearing that agency's identifying mark.
6. Terminology Traps Seen on the Written Exam
- "Sanitary tee" is not a "tee." A sanitary tee has a curved sweep in the branch and is permitted only horizontal-to-vertical. A straight (vent) tee is not a drainage fitting.
- "Building trap" is not a "fixture trap." A building trap (house trap) is a running trap on the building drain and is generally prohibited unless the AHJ requires it.
- "Grade" and "slope" are the same idea, but "grade" also means ground level. Read the sentence.
- "Riser" means a water supply line rising one full story or more, not any vertical pipe.
- "Main" is the principal artery of a system, to which branches connect — there are drainage mains, vent mains, and water mains.
