The Matrix

The matrix is the living, actively growing tissue at the base of the nail, hidden under the skin fold at the nail's root. This is where new nail cells are produced — all nail growth occurs in the matrix. As new cells form, older cells are pushed forward, harden (keratinize), and become the nail plate. Because the matrix is the growth center, an injury here can produce a permanently deformed or ridged nail plate.
