The Exposure Incident Procedure

  3. Clean the injured area with soap and water or an antiseptic wipe, applying pressure with a clean cotton pad or gauze if bleeding continues.
  4. Bandage the wound with an adhesive bandage.
  5. Discard contaminated items — cotton, gauze, and gloves into a sealed plastic bag; blades or lancets into the sharps container.
  6. Clean and disinfect the workstation, tools, and any surface the blood touched, using an EPA-registered disinfectant.

  8. Return to the service only after the area is clean, disinfected, and both you and the client are protected.
