Underlying (Contributing) Pigment
Underlying pigment, also called contributing pigment, is the warm pigment that is revealed as artificial or natural melanin is broken down during lightening. You can never lift without exposing it — lifting a level 4 medium brown two levels will always unveil orange-red warmth. That is why formulations for lifting include neutralizing drab or ash tones: the formula must deposit complementary pigment to counteract the warmth the lift itself creates.
