Temporary color (color rinses, sprays, mascaras, colored mousses) sits on the outside of the hair shaft because its molecules are too large to enter the cortex. It is the only category that truly shampoos out in one wash.

Semi-permanent color penetrates slightly under the cuticle without any chemical alteration of natural pigment, so it adds depth and tone but can never make hair lighter. It is ideal for refreshing faded ends or trying a tone commitment-free.

Demi-permanent color uses a low-volume developer to swell the cuticle slightly, so it lasts longer and blends gray beautifully, but because it contains no ammonia it cannot lift — it is strictly deposit-only.

Permanent haircolor is the workhorse: ammonia raises the pH to swell the cuticle, peroxide lightens natural melanin, and small colorless dye precursors enter the cortex and oxidize into large, trapped color molecules. Because natural pigment is permanently altered, the result does not wash out — it grows out, creating a line of demarcation that requires a retouch every 4–6 weeks.

Oxidative vs. Non-Oxidative Color

Non-oxidative color contains pre-formed dye molecules that require no chemical reaction to develop — temporary and semi-permanent products fall here. Oxidative color requires a developer (oxidizing agent) to trigger the chemical reaction that develops color inside the cortex — demi-permanent and permanent colors, lighteners, and toners are oxidative. Exam questions often ask which categories are oxidative; remember the split as: anything mixed with developer is oxidative.

Hydrogen Peroxide Developers

Developer (hydrogen peroxide, H2O2) supplies the oxygen that drives oxidation. Volume measures its strength — the amount of oxygen released — and volume directly controls lifting power:

Two exam-critical rules: 20 volume is the standard for covering gray, because resistant gray needs enough swelling and processing to accept pigment, and higher volume increases lift but also increases damage risk. Using 40 volume on the scalp can cause chemical burns — most manufacturers restrict it to off-scalp techniques.

Lighteners

Lighteners (bleach) decolorize melanin through oxidation and can lift far more levels than tint. They are classified by where they may be applied:

Fillers replace missing warm undertones when taking bleached or very light hair significantly darker. The filler — typically a gold, copper, or red demi-permanent — repigments the hair first, then the target shade is applied.

Henna, Metallic & Vegetable Dyes

Henna is a natural vegetable dye that coats and penetrates the hair with lawsone pigment; because it leaves a permanent, unpredictable coating, permanent color and lighteners cannot be applied over it reliably and chemical texture services may react badly. Metallic dyes (progressive dyes containing lead acetate or other metal salts) are worse: contact with peroxide or ammonia can trigger a violent exothermic reaction — heat, smoke, hair breakage, and scalp injury. A strand test exposing the hair to lightener reveals metallic salts. Pure vegetable dyes other than henna (like chamomile rinses) are mild and temporary. The exam loves the rule: never perform oxidative chemical services over metallic-salt dyes, and treat henna-coated hair as incompatible until proven otherwise.

PPD & the Patch Test

Permanent and demi-permanent colors are aniline derivative tints, and many contain PPD (para-phenylenediamine), a known allergen. A patch test, also called a predisposition test, is required by law and by every manufacturer 24–48 hours before the color service. A small amount of the exact formula is applied to clean skin behind the ear or on the inner bend of the elbow and left to dry; any redness, itching, swelling, or blistering is a positive reaction and the service must be refused. A negative test does not guarantee future safety, but a skipped test is both a liability and a guaranteed exam wrong answer.
