Pre-Loss Planning
Loss control is planned during the same fire safety inspections that produce the pre-fire plan. The plan should already name what must be protected first in each occupancy: pharmacy stock and patient records in a district hospital, the server room and uninterruptible power supply room on a business-process-outsourcing floor, the vault and ledgers in a rural bank, images and vestments in a parish church, enrolment records in a public school, and stall inventories in a public market where hundreds of vendors carry no insurance at all.
Salvage Covers and Water Control
Salvage covers — heavy canvas or vinyl sheets — are the core tool, and crews must be able to deploy them fast, in the dark, with two people or one.

- Run negative-pressure ventilation after knockdown. Smoke residue is acidic and corrosive; the faster it is exhausted and surfaces are wiped or covered, the less electronics, appliances and merchandise are written off.
