1.3 Senior High School Track Integration and Career Guidance

Quick Summary: CB-NCAE results feed one decision: what to take in Senior High School. From SY 2026–2027, Grade 11 follows the Strengthened Senior High School (SSHS) Curriculum under DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026. It has two tracks, Academic and Technical-Professional (Tech-Pro), and five core subjects, with clusters of electives replacing the old strands. Under DO 55, s. 2016, CB-NCAE results are recommendations: DepEd sets no cut-off, and the learner's informed choice prevails.

From Four Tracks and Strands to Two Tracks and Clusters

The SHS programme that began in SY 2016–2017 had four tracks: Academic, Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL), Sports, and Arts and Design. The Academic track was divided into strands such as STEM, ABM, HUMSS, and GAS. DO 017, s. 2026 replaces that structure:

Core subjects155, all taken in Grade 11
Work immersionPart of the programmeMandatory on Tech-Pro; optional elective on the Academic track

The five core subjects are:

  • Effective Communication / Mabisang Komunikasyon
  • General Mathematics
  • General Science
  • Life and Career Skills
  • Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino

Together they make up 800 hours in Grade 11.

A cluster is not a strand. DO 017 states that schools need not offer every elective in a cluster, and that learners may pick electives from more than one cluster. Two schools on the same track can therefore offer quite different lists. Read your CB-NCAE results alongside what the receiving school actually offers.

The Academic Track

The Academic Track is designed mainly for learners who will go on to higher education. It has five elective clusters:

ClusterExamples of electives
Arts, Social Sciences, and HumanitiesCreative industries (visual, literary, media, music, dance, theatre), contemporary literature, creative composition, Filipino, philosophy, citizenship and civic engagement, Philippine governance, social sciences
Business and EntrepreneurshipBasic accounting, business finance and income taxation, business economics, contemporary marketing, entrepreneurship, organisation and management
Science, Technology, Engineering, and MathematicsBiology, chemistry, physics, and earth and space science sequences; pre-calculus; basic calculus; finite mathematics; empowerment technologies; data analytics
Sports, Health, and WellnessHuman movement, physical education, sports coaching and officiating, exercise programming, first aid, basic life support
Field ExperienceArts apprenticeship, design and innovation, research, field exposure, and work immersion for the Academic Track

A learner taking only Academic electives completes the five core subjects and three electives in Grade 11, then nine to twelve electives in Grade 12, for 2,000 hours in all. A cross-track option allows one Tech-Pro elective in Grade 12.

The Technical-Professional (Tech-Pro) Track

Tech-Pro replaces TVL. Its electives follow TESDA training regulations, with national certification as the goal, and work immersion is mandatory. It has ten clusters:

  1. Aesthetic, Wellness, and Human Care
  2. Agri-Fishery Business and Food Innovation
  3. Artisanry and Creative Enterprise
  4. Automotive and Small Engine Technologies
  5. Construction and Building Technologies
  6. Creative Arts and Design Technologies
  7. Hospitality and Tourism
  8. Industrial Technologies
  9. ICT Support and Computer Programming Technologies
  10. Maritime Transport

Where the CB-NCAE Fits

DO 55, s. 2016 sets how career assessment results are used:

  • Results are recommendatory, and DepEd prescribes no cut-off score.
  • The learner's career choice, based on aptitude and occupational interest, prevails. The guidance counsellor or guidance teacher facilitates it, guided by labour-market trends.
  • Guidance counsellors hold an orientation for parents on the results and on in-demand and hard-to-fill occupations in the region.

DO 017, s. 2026 includes an annex that guides the selection of tracks and electives. Division memoranda implementing it point schools to NCAE results as one input among several. The CB-NCAE informs the choice but does not make it. If a particular school or special programme has its own entry requirements, they come from that school or programme, not from the CB-NCAE.

Important

Old reviewers sometimes quote strand cut-offs, such as a percentile rank needed for the former STEM strand. Those rules referred to strands and paper-NCAE aptitude scales that no longer exist. Check current requirements with the receiving school.

Reading Aptitude and Interest Together

The tables below are one illustrative way to link subtests and interests to clusters. They are not a DepEd matrix. A strong result in one row is a reason to explore those clusters, not an instruction to enrol in them.

Strong GSA subtestClusters that use this reasoning heavily
Numerical ReasoningSTEM; Business and Entrepreneurship; ICT Support and Computer Programming Technologies
Abstract ReasoningSTEM; ICT Support and Computer Programming Technologies; Creative Arts and Design Technologies
Verbal ReasoningArts, Social Sciences, and Humanities; Business and Entrepreneurship; Hospitality and Tourism
Logical ReasoningSTEM; Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (philosophy and governance electives); computer programming
Spatial ReasoningConstruction and Building Technologies; Creative Arts and Design Technologies; STEM
Mechanical ReasoningAutomotive and Small Engine Technologies; Industrial Technologies; Maritime Transport; Construction and Building Technologies
PAREBusiness and Entrepreneurship (accounting); ICT support; other records-heavy work
CORE-A typeClusters that often suit it
RealisticAutomotive, Construction, Industrial Technologies, Agri-Fishery, and Maritime Transport; STEM
InvestigativeSTEM; ICT Support and Computer Programming Technologies
ArtisticArts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (arts electives); Creative Arts and Design Technologies; Artisanry and Creative Enterprise
SocialArts, Social Sciences, and Humanities; Sports, Health, and Wellness; Aesthetic, Wellness, and Human Care
EnterprisingBusiness and Entrepreneurship; Hospitality and Tourism; Agri-Fishery Business and Food Innovation
ConventionalBusiness and Entrepreneurship; ICT Support and Computer Programming Technologies

Three habits keep the reading honest:

  1. Read the two domains together. Strong Numerical and Abstract results with an Investigative interest point toward STEM. The same aptitude with an Artistic interest may point toward design.
  2. Check what is offered. Clusters are offered school by school, so list the electives the receiving school actually runs before deciding.
  3. Use the time you have. From SY 2026–2027, Grade 9 learners also take the CB-NCAE. That leaves a year to strengthen a weak area or explore an interest before Grade 11 enrolment.

Chapter 9 explains how to interpret a full profile.

Test Your Knowledge

How does DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026 restructure the Senior High School tracks?

A

It turns the STEM, ABM, HUMSS, and GAS strands into four separate tracks with fixed subject lists.

B

It keeps the four previous tracks but adds a fifth track for maritime, fishery, and agriculture learners.

C

It removes Grade 12 so that learners can finish Senior High School in a single school year.

D

It replaces the four old tracks with two, Academic and Tech-Pro, each organised into elective clusters.

Test Your Knowledge

Test Your Knowledge

Under DepEd Order No. 55, s. 2016, how should CB-NCAE results be used when a learner chooses a Senior High School track?

A

As the only basis for awarding public scholarship grants to Grade 11 learners

B

As recommendations: DepEd sets no cut-off score, and the learner's informed career choice prevails

C

As a binding placement order that assigns each learner to one track and one cluster

D

As a pass mark that decides whether a learner may finish junior high school and enrol in Grade 11
