Standard English conventions including subject-verb agreement, pronoun case, pronoun-antecedent agreement, verb tense consistency, adjective/adverb distinctions, capitalization, and commonly confused words.

Sentence Structure~20%

Identifying and correcting sentence fragments, run-ons, comma splices, dangling and misplaced modifiers, parallel structure errors, and faulty comparisons.

Punctuation~20%

Correct use of commas, semicolons, colons, apostrophes (possessives and contractions), dashes, and hyphens in compound modifiers.

Organization and Transitions~15%

Paragraph unity, topic sentences, concluding sentences, logical sentence order, and selecting transitions that match the relationship between ideas (additive, contrast, cause-effect).

Word Choice and Diction~10%

Choosing precise, appropriate vocabulary; distinguishing homophones and commonly confused words; identifying redundancy; matching tone and register to context.

Rhetorical Effectiveness~5%

Evaluating the effectiveness of writing choices including conciseness, active vs. passive voice, thesis quality, evidence strength, tone appropriateness, and argument development.
