Can You Take the PA Act 235 Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must be at least 18 years of age
- •Must pass a physical examination by a PA-licensed physician on Form SP 8-200A, including 20/70 uncorrected vision in the stronger eye correctable to 20/20, 20/200 uncorrected in the weaker eye correctable to 20/40, and the ability to distinguish a normal whisper at 15 feet
- •Must pass a psychological examination on Form SP 8-200B, including a personal interview and a current standard form of the MMPI, administered by a PA-licensed psychologist
- •Must complete the 40-hour basic course at a PSP-certified school (26-hour academic module plus 14-hour firearms module)
- •Must score at least 70% on the academic module and, for firearms certification, at least 75% on the firearms module

The largest single block of the prescribed academic module: Title 18 offense classifications under § 106, assault offenses (§§ 2701-2702), recklessly endangering another person (§ 2705), defiant trespass (§ 3503(b)), retail theft and the merchant's privilege (§ 3929), criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, and the Uniform Firearms Act in Chapter 61.
Defensive tactics, impact-weapon use and target zones, and handcuffing — the block that supports the Type L nonfirearms certification, since 37 Pa. Code § 21.1 treats both concealed and nonconcealed billy clubs as lethal weapons.
18 Pa.C.S. Chapter 5: unlawful force and deadly force definitions (§ 501), self-protection (§ 505), protection of other persons (§ 506), the property-defense deadly-force prohibition (§ 507(c)), and use of force in law enforcement (§ 508).
The written academic module examination and course closeout. Under 37 Pa. Code § 21.19(3)(i) a candidate must attain at least 70% on this examination; a candidate who fails must repeat the entire module before the approval to attend training expires.
