Who Can Apply for the Karnataka VAO Exam?

The Karnataka Village Administrative Officer (VAO) exam is conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for recruitment to village-level revenue posts. Before you start preparing, you must confirm you are eligible — KEA rejects ineligible applications at the document-verification stage, and the application fee is not refunded. Educational Qualification

The baseline requirement is that you must have passed 2nd PUC (Pre-University Course, Class 12) or an equivalent examination from a recognized board. KEA accepts the following qualifications as equivalent to 2nd PUC:

Age Limits

The minimum age is 18 years, computed as on the last date to submit the online application. The upper age limit depends on your reservation category and on the relaxation in force for that cycle — the numbers below are from the 2026 notifications and are a guide, not a permanent rule.

These figures already include the five-year relaxation granted by the Karnataka Government Order dated 29 January 2026. The baseline limits under the Karnataka Civil Services (General Recruitment) Rules, 1977 are 35 / 38 / 40; the current notification adds five years to each. Further relaxations are notified separately for Ex-Servicemen, Persons with Benchmark Disability, widows and serving government employees.

CRITICAL: Age relaxations and the exact upper limits change by recruitment cycle. Always confirm the upper age limit against the live KEA notification for the cycle you are applying to. Do not rely on a single number as eternal — a cycle can change the cap by a year or more.

• Citizenship: Must be a citizen of India.
• Kannada language requirement: All candidates must pass the Compulsory Kannada Test unless specifically exempted (typically candidates who studied Kannada as a subject up to a certain level). This is a qualifying test — passing it is mandatory, but its marks are not added to the merit list.

Reappearing in Future Cycles

Candidates who do not qualify in one cycle can register and reappear in future KEA cycles as long as they still meet the age and qualification limits on the cutoff date of the new cycle.
