The exam is not asking you to repair a circuit board. It is asking you to name the current, pick the machine, screen the contraindication, and disinfect what touched the client.
Illinois 1175.115(d) is the legal overlay on every plug. A machine used in esthetics must meet product registration and product safety requirements of any federal, State, county, or local authority. If the device is classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), you must verify, maintain, or be able to access the documentation. You may not use the device unless the use is part of services within your scope, is consistent with the manufacturer’s intended use, and is consistent with client health and safety. A steamer used as labeled is in bounds. A radio-frequency handpiece marketed to heat living dermis is not saved because it sits on the same rolling cart.
Conductors, insulators, and a complete circuit
Electricity is the movement of electrons along a path. That path is a circuit. Current does not flow until the circuit is complete (closed). Break the path — unplug the electrode, lift the wand, trip a breaker — and the modality stops. That is why a loose inactive electrode in galvanic work, or a client who lets go of the handheld electrode, is not a small inconvenience. The circuit is open.
A conductor lets electrons move. Exam-typical conductors are metals, carbon, water, and the human body. That last one is why electrical modalities work on skin and why wet hands on a damaged cord are a shock risk. An insulator resists flow. Exam-typical insulators are rubber, silk, wood, glass, cement, and plastic. The rubber on a cord and the plastic housing on a steamer are not decoration. They are the barrier between the client and a conductor.
Direct current (DC) is a constant, even-flowing current traveling in one direction. Batteries produce DC. Galvanic current is DC. Alternating current (AC) is a rapid, interrupted current that reverses direction. Wall outlets supply AC. Tesla high-frequency is an oscillating alternating current. If a stem asks which facial current is direct, the answer is galvanic. If it asks which is alternating, the answer is high-frequency.
The four units you must match

Ohm’s-law thinking is enough: more voltage through the same resistance means more current; more resistance (dry, thick, poorly contacted skin) means less current for the same setting. Do not crank a galvanic milliammeter because the client “doesn’t feel it yet.” Check contact, moisture, and whether the inactive electrode is in the hand.
Grounding and GFCI
Grounding gives stray current a safe path to the earth instead of through the client or the operator. A three-prong plug is the exam picture: two blades carry the circuit; the round pin is the ground. Do not break off the ground pin to fit a two-hole outlet. 1175.115(e) already requires compliance with electrical as well as plumbing, fire, and building codes.
A ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is an outlet or breaker that trips when it detects current leaking from the intended path — typical of a wet room with a steamer, spray machine, and wet hands. Plug facial machines into a GFCI-protected circuit in wet areas. If a machine sparks at the plug, overheats, or has a cracked housing, take it out of service. 1175.115(b)(25) requires equipment to be kept clean and in good repair. A frayed cord is not “good repair.”
Analysis lamps: magnifying and Woods
The magnifying lamp (loupe) is the analysis light. Typical teaching strength is about 5 diopters. Use it after cleanse, with the client draped, to look at texture, comedones, capillaries, and lesions you will not diagnose. Do not park the hot bulb on the client’s face. Disinfect the contact surfaces of the arm and handle; the lens is wiped as the manufacturer allows.
The Woods lamp is a filtered black light used in a darkened room after cleanse. It is an analysis aid, not a diagnosis. Exam-typical color teaching:

A Woods lamp does not let you name melanoma. 225 ILCS 410/3A-1 still forbids medical-treatment advice. If you see an irregular pigmented lesion, you refer. You do not treat it with galvanic current because it “looked brown under the lamp.”
Steamer, vacuum/spray, brushing, and the Lucas sprayer
The facial steamer softens sebum and corneum with warm vapor so extraction and product work are easier. Use distilled water unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise; tap minerals scale the heating element. Keep the nozzle at a textbook teaching distance of about 15–18 inches — close enough to warm, not close enough to scald or drip condensate onto the eye. Typical steam time is about 5–10 minutes, adjusted to skin. Do not steam rosacea/couperose, highly sensitive or sunburned skin, respiratory congestion the client cannot tolerate, or skin you may not massage under 1175.115 (inflamed, infected, or erupting). Optional ozone on some steamers is a surface germicidal add-on, not a medical wound treatment.
The vacuum/spray machine has two jobs. Vacuum (suction) helps lift debris from follicles after softening; it is not a substitute for proper extraction technique and is contraindicated on couperose, inflamed acne, and fragile skin. Spray atomizes toner or astringent. Cups and bottles that contact product or skin are cleaned and disinfected or are single-use.
The brushing machine uses rotating brushes for mechanical cleansing/exfoliation of resilient skin. It is not for acne, rosacea, sunburn, or thin skin. Brushes that contact the client are cleaned, then disinfected if nonporous and reusable; porous brush heads that cannot be disinfected are discarded (1175.115(b)(3), (b)(11)).
The Lucas sprayer (Lucas Championnière atomizer) is a cool, fine mist used to apply product — often hydrators or diluted essential-oil blends at the end of a facial. It is a delivery tool, not an inhalational medical treatment. See Section 15.3 for aromatherapy claims.
Galvanic: anaphoresis and cataphoresis
Galvanic current is DC. Two electrodes complete the circuit: the active electrode produces the effect you want (usually on the face); the inactive electrode is typically held in the client’s hand or placed on a large, padded contact. Water-soluble products can be driven by polarity. Oil-only products do not ionize well.

Memorize the pairing, not a brand protocol. Desincrustation is the alkaline negative-pole step. Iontophoresis is the general term for driving ions; on the exam it is often the positive pole calming the skin. Do not reverse poles because a classmate “always starts positive.” Follow the machine’s labeled polarity and the product’s intended pole.
High-frequency: direct, indirect, sparking
High-frequency (Tesla) is alternating, oscillating current. A glass electrode (often argon/violet for oily/acne teaching or neon/orange for dry/mature teaching) ionizes oxygen into ozone with a germicidal effect when used on the skin.
- Direct method: the electrode contacts the skin (sometimes over dry gauze). This is the germicidal method used on congested or acne-prone surface skin.
- Indirect method: the client holds the electrode and the esthetician massages. This is warming and stimulating, not the primary germicidal application.
- Sparking: after extraction, lift the electrode slightly so a small spark treats the open follicle. This is a surface germicidal step, not electrosurgery.
Keep high-frequency away from flammable products (alcohol, some solvents). Do not use it to “cauterize” living tissue. That intent is medicine.
Ultrasonic spatula as a surface tool
NIC II.L.1 lists ultrasonic among other facial services. The exam-typical ultrasonic spatula vibrates at high frequency to loosen surface debris and dead cells — a mechanical, stratum-corneum assist, often with a water film. It is not high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) aimed at living SMAS or dermis, and it is not a medical cavitation body device. If the manufacturer’s indication is dermal lifting or living-layer disruption, 1175.115(d)(4) plus 225 ILCS 410/3A-1 keep it off the esthetics menu.
Contraindications and disinfection
Screen before the machine is on:
- Pacemaker or implanted defibrillator — no electrical modalities
- Metal implants, braces, extensive dental work — galvanic and high-frequency are typical refusals or modifications
- Pregnancy — skip galvanic, high-frequency, and other currents the manufacturer contraindicates
- Epilepsy or seizure history — no electrical modalities
- Heart conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure — modify or refuse per protocol and manufacturer
- Open lesions, inflamed or infected skin — 1175.115 already forbids massaging that surface
- Fear of electricity — do not force a current; use a non-machine facial (1175.835 still trains treatments without machines)
1175.115(b)(3) is the per-client machine rule: all tools, implements, and items that come in direct contact with a client shall be cleaned and disinfected or disposed of after use on each client. That includes glass electrodes, vacuum cups, brush heads, spray nozzles, ultrasonic spatula blades, steamer nozzle exteriors that were wiped on skin or linens, and diamond tips you will meet in Section 15.2. Clean visible debris first, then apply an EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectant for the labeled contact time. Porous covers, gauze, and disposable electrodes go in the trash. Store cleaned-and-disinfected parts separately from used ones. A glass electrode wiped with a soiled towel and set back in the drawer is not disinfection. It is unprofessional conduct under the opening sentence of 1175.115.
