The Five Great Circles and Why Seasons Exist
Earth's axis is tilted roughly 23.5 degrees (23 deg 26 min) away from the vertical, and that single fact produces every season on the planet. It also fixes five reference lines of latitude that recur constantly in Foundation questions.

Between the two Tropics the sun passes directly overhead at least once a year, which is why the tropics run on wet and dry seasons rather than four temperature seasons. The equinoxes, around 20 March and 22 September, give roughly equal day and night worldwide.
The Hemisphere Reversal: The Classic Booking Trap

Tourist Season Is Not the Same as Climatic Season
The trade divides the year into three commercial bands:
- High / peak season - highest demand and rates, minimum-stay rules, blackout dates, thin availability.
- Shoulder season - the weeks either side of peak; usually the best value-to-weather compromise and the band a good consultant sells hardest.
- Low / off season - lowest rates and widest availability, but genuine risk of poor weather, resort and restaurant closures, reduced flight frequencies and suspended excursion programmes.
These bands track demand, not the thermometer. That is why the tourist season and the climatic season frequently disagree:
- Alpine ski resorts: high season is northern winter, roughly December to March, with a Christmas/New Year and February half-term super-peak.
- The Caribbean: high season is northern winter, roughly mid-December to mid-April, driven by North American and European escape demand rather than by local weather.
- The Mediterranean: high season is northern summer, July and August, reinforced by European school holidays.
- East African safari: high season follows the dry season; the Great Migration typically reaches the Masai Mara between July and October (Kenya Wildlife Service), and camps price accordingly.

The Harmattan is a dry, dust-laden north-easterly off the Sahara whose haze routinely cuts visibility below one kilometre and causes West African diversions and cancellations. Travel insurance normally stops covering a storm once it has been named, so a client booking into a hurricane window must buy cover and any flexible-fare option at the time of booking, not when a system appears on the forecast map.
Altitude, Acclimatisation and Daylight Extremes
Cusco (CUZ) sits at 3,399 m / 11,152 ft, higher than Machu Picchu itself at 2,430 m. La Paz is served by El Alto (LPB) at 4,061 m, the highest international airport in the world, and Lhasa (LXA) sits at 3,656 m. The UIAA guideline is to raise sleeping altitude by no more than about 500 m per day above 3,000 m, so the professional Peru itinerary lands at CUZ and descends the same day to the Sacred Valley at about 2,850 m for two nights before returning up to Cusco. Note also that the Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance while the citadel itself stays open.
At the other extreme, Nordic itineraries are sold on daylight. Tromso (TOS), north of the Arctic Circle, has midnight sun from about 20 May to 22 July and polar night from 27 November to 15 January; at the North Cape polar night runs about 20 November to 22 January. Aurora clients must therefore be sold into the dark months and never into June.

Moving to mid-May puts them in the shoulder band at 120, a reduction of about 31 per cent on the accommodation element, calculated as (175 - 120) / 175. If the resort's low-season rate were USD 400 per night, seven nights would cost roughly USD 3,360 in May against USD 4,900 in February - a saving of about USD 1,540 - while still avoiding the wettest south-west monsoon months. Present both options and state the weather trade-off in writing: that written trade-off is the consultant's protection if the weather disappoints.
