1.1 About the FPGEE

What the FPGEE Is

The FPGEE is a comprehensive equivalency examination that confirms an internationally educated pharmacist's foundational knowledge is comparable to that of a US pharmacy graduate. It is not a licensure exam by itself; it is the academic-equivalency gate inside the FPGEC certification process. After you complete credential evaluation, pass the TOEFL iBT (required before FPGEC acceptance), and then pass the FPGEE, NABP issues FPGEC certification, which then makes you eligible to sit for the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE), the two exams used by state boards for licensure.

Exam Format

The FPGEE is a fixed-form, computer-based test. You will answer 200 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours 30 minutes, with a total seat time of about 5.5 hours once the non-disclosure agreement (NDA), tutorial, and breaks are included. Most questions are single-best-answer; you cannot skip a question and return to it later, so commit to an answer before moving on.

The Four Content Domains

The FPGEE blueprint divides 200 questions across four weighted domains. Use the question counts below to budget study time.

The Clinical Sciences domain is the largest, with therapeutics, pharmacotherapy decisions, patient safety, and clinical monitoring across cardiovascular, endocrine, infectious disease, respiratory, GI, renal, and other therapeutic areas. Pharmaceutical Sciences is the second largest, covering medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics, compounding, and pharmaceutical calculations.

Eligibility

You cannot register for the FPGEE directly. You must first apply to and be accepted by the FPGEC. To be accepted, you must satisfy all of the following:

1. Education — Graduate of a recognized or accredited non-US pharmacy program that meets FPGEC criteria.
2. Credential evaluation — Submit your transcripts through NABP's Electronic Profile System; an Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) evaluation is used to verify foreign education.
3. English proficiency — Achieve passing TOEFL iBT section scores (speaking, reading, listening, writing) before FPGEC acceptance.
4. Fees — Pay the FPGEC application fee and, after acceptance, the FPGEE registration fee.

Some candidates may need to complete additional coursework if their program does not map fully to a US pharmacy curriculum.

Scheduling and Test Centers

The FPGEE is offered once per year. For 2026, the administration date is October 15, 2026, and the registration deadline is September 1, 2026. Pearson VUE delivers the exam at more than 200 test centers in the continental United States, including centers in Puerto Rico and Guam. The FPGEE is not offered in Alaska or Hawaii, so plan travel accordingly if you reside outside the continental US.

Scoring and Retake Policy

FPGEE scoring uses a scaled score, with 75 required to pass. NABP does not publish a raw-percent cut score. Scaled scoring adjusts for small differences in question difficulty across fixed forms, so a raw number of correct answers is not published as a cut score. Results are released approximately 8 weeks after the exam.

The retake policy has two limits that work together:

• Lifetime attempt cap — A maximum of 5 lifetime FPGEE attempts.
• FPGEC eligibility window — You must retake within your active 2-year FPGEC acceptance period.

If you do not pass within the 2-year window or after 5 attempts, your FPGEC application closes and you would need to reapply. A $200 rescore request can be submitted within 60 days of a result if you believe a scoring error occurred.

Test-Day Logistics

After check-in you will complete a 5-minute NDA and a 10-minute tutorial on the testing software. The exam is delivered as a single 4.5-hour block with two scheduled 15-minute breaks that pause the clock: one after 90 minutes and one after 180 minutes. You cannot return to questions once you submit them. An on-screen scientific and 5-function calculator is provided, and an erasable note board replaces scratch paper. As of April 1, 2026, NABP no longer issues the FPGEE Identification Card (FIC); identification is handled through your Pearson VUE appointment and your FPGEC portal.

Pass Rate

The NABP 2024-2025 Annual Report lists an FPGEE pass rate of approximately 91% in 2024. Pass rates vary by country of education and preparation depth, so treat the figure as a benchmark rather than a personal prediction.
