13.1 Tarea 3: Photograph Description & Guided Follow-Up

Key Takeaways

  • Oral Task 3 lasts 2–3 minutes in total, combining photo description with related questions.

  • Choose one of two photographs during the examination; it is not part of the advance preparation period.

  • A disciplined spatial architecture (en primer plano, al fondo, a la izquierda/derecha) and present continuous constructions (estar + gerundio) provide clear descriptive structure.

  • The decisive B1 differentiator is speculative language (parece que, deben de tener, puede que sean, a lo mejor) that interprets human relationships, emotions, and context beyond surface-level enumeration.

  • During the follow-up phase, candidates must smoothly bridge from the visual scenario to their own personal habits, cultural experiences, and comparative opinions.

Tarea 3: Photograph Description & Guided Follow-Up

Tarea 3 combines a brief description of a chosen photograph with questions about it. Its published duration is 2–3 minutes in total. Choose between two photos during the examination, inspect the scene and respond to the interviewer’s instructions. Do not assume a separate fixed 1–2-minute allowance for each phase or access to the photo in the earlier preparation room.

The later role-play is connected to the everyday situation in the photo. Look for who is present, what they are doing and what kind of setting it is. The aim is a clear, organized description and responsive conversation, rather than a memorized visual essay.

Use the official model materials to practice with actual photographs. The constructed scene below illustrates language choices; the transcript is not a substitute for looking at an unfamiliar image.

Spatial & Descriptive Architecture

An unstructured description that jumps randomly between unrelated visual elements sounds chaotic and exhausts vocabulary prematurely. High-scoring candidates organize their speech using a methodical spatial progression, moving systematically from the foreground to the background and from global atmosphere to specific details.

Spatial Orientation Lexicon

SurroundingsAlrededor de, en torno a, junto a, al lado deGrouping companion objects and spatial relationships between people

Human Subjects: Physical Appearance, Apparel, & Dynamic Actions

When describing the people in the image, avoid static formulas («Hay tres personas»). Instead, deploy dynamic descriptions combining physical estimation, clothing, posture, and ongoing actions:

  1. Age Estimation & Demographics:
  2. Apparel & Presentation:
    • Use specific verbs for wearing: lleva puesto / viste / viste de manera informal / lleva ropa deportiva.
  3. Ongoing Actions with Estar + Gerundio:
    • Both the simple present and estar + gerundio can describe actions in an image: una mujer cocina and una mujer está cocinando. Use a form that expresses the intended observation naturally.

Setting, Ambiance, & Decor

Situate the human drama within its physical context:

The Critical B1 Differentiator: Hypothesizing & Speculation

The fundamental boundary between CEFR A2 and CEFR B1 lies in conjecture. An A2 speaker merely catalogs visible reality («Hay una mesa. Hay dos personas. Están comiendo»). A B1 candidate constructs plausible hypotheses about what is not explicitly visible: the relationship between subjects, their emotional states, what happened immediately before, and what will happen next.

[ Level A2: Mechanical Enumeration ]
↳ "Hay tres personas en una oficina. Tienen ordenadores. Llevan camisas."

[ Level B1: Interpretive Speculation ]

High-Impact Speculative Formulas

Deploy a varied repertoire of conjecture formulas throughout your description:

Speculative FunctionGrammatical ExponentStructural RuleIllustrative Example

Tip

Alternating between parece que (+ indicative) and puede que (+ subjunctive) showcases both morphological sophistication and pragmatic range to the assessing calificador.

Annotated Model Description Script

Here is an original extended practice description for a photograph depicting three young professionals collaborating around a rustic wooden table in a brightly lit co-working cafe:

[SPATIAL INTRODUCTION & SETTING]

[DETAILED SUBJECT DESCRIPTION & ACTIONS]

Managing Guided Follow-Up Questions

Once you conclude your monologue, the interviewer will take the floor to conduct the conversational follow-up within the total task time. The interviewer's questions use the photograph as a thematic launchpad to explore three concentric circles of inquiry:

[ Center: The Photograph Scene ]
              ↓
[ Inner Ring: Candidate's Personal Habits & Memories ]
↳ "¿Usted suele teletrabajar o prefiere acudir a una oficina tradicional?"
              ↓
[ Outer Ring: Broad Societal, Cultural, or Future Comparisons ]

Bridging Strategies & Conversational Connectors

Never answer follow-up questions in isolation from the image you just analyzed. Seamlessly connect the interviewer's inquiry back to the visual stimulus using discursive bridges:

  • Referencing the Image:
  • Expanding Personal Habits with Frequency Markers:
  • Expressing Generational or Societal Trends:

By anchoring your responses in both the stimulus photograph and broader communicative frameworks, you demonstrate fluency, conversational agility, and sophisticated topical command.
